Tigers Advance to East Region Semifinals After Five-Set Thriller Over Chargers



Springfield, Mass. – The Holy Family University women's volleyball team will be advancing to the NCAA Division II East Region semifinals for the third straight time after defeating No. 4 the University of New Haven, 3-2, in the quarterfinals on Thursday night at Butova Gymnasium on the campus of American International.

How It Happened
 
* Trailing the match 2-0 after dropping the first two sets, Holy Family kept hope alive with a 25-23 victory in the third set.  The Tigers trailed 16-11 but used an 8-2 run to take a 19-18 advantage.  The Chargers would go on to tie the set at 23-23 before fifth-year Carly Covington (Delmar, Md./Delmar) tallied a kill followed by a New Haven attack error to take the set.
 
* In the fourth set, New Haven opened with a 6-1 run but Holy Family responded in a big way with a 7-2 run to tie the set at 8-8.  Later in the set, junior Maeve Boylan (Ridley Township, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) recorded her 70th service ace of the season to lead 14-11.  Holy Family would go on to lead by as many as five points at 22-17.  The Chargers came soaring back to tie the set at 22-22.  Down the stretch both teams battled back-and-forth before Holy Family scored the final two points.  Senior Stephanie Woolston (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) sealed the set with an ace at 27-25 to force a fifth and decisive set.
 
* In the fifth set already leading 9-8, the Tigers recorded four straight points to increase its advantage to 13-8.  Camille Johnson (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) powered the Tigers with five kills in the set.  New Haven came within two points at 13-11.  A service error by New Haven gave the Tigers a match-point opportunity at 14-11.  The Chargers followed with a kill before Holy Family clinched the win off a kill from Allyssa Hartney (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley)
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Hartney and Johnson combined for 45 kills as both set new career-highs.  Hartney recorded a match-high 27 kills to go along with seven digs.  Johnson finished with 18 kills and six block assists. 
 
* Covington totaled 15 kills and finished with a game-high 25 digs; one shy of her career-high.  She also had five block assists.
 
* Senior Morgan Silks (Norristown, Pa./Archbishop John Carroll) tallied a team-high 53 assists to go along with 21 digs. 
 
* Sophomore Faith Zehnder (Lakewood, Colo./Lakewood) came away with 20 digs, while Boylan totaled 12 digs.  Woolston recorded a season-high 10 digs.
 
* For New Haven, Macy Brown led the team with 20 kills and 23 digs.  Sophia Leon-Tabor led the match with 54 assists.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the seventh meeting between Holy Family and New Haven since the start of the 2009 season.  The Tigers are now 2-5 versus the Chargers in the all-time series; both victories coming in the NCAA Tournament.
 
Next Up
Holy Family returns to action on Friday as the Tigers take on top-seeded and host AIC in the East Region semifinals.  Match time is set for 7:30 p.m.
