Tigers Drop Season Opener Versus Ravens, 68-57



Staten Island, N.Y. –  The Holy Family University women's basketball came up short in its season opener against Franklin Pierce University, 68-57, on day one of the Conference Challenge hosted by the College of Staten Island on Saturday night at the Sports and Recreation Center.

Game Recap
 
* Franklin Pierce scored the game's first seven points and never once relinquished the lead.  Holy Family cut the lead to 7-4 after scoring on back-to-back possessions after the Ravens' opening run.  However, Franklin Pierce closed out the first quarter on a 13-3 surge to lead 20-7 by quarters end.
 
* The Ravens started the second quarter the same way they started the first by scoring the first seven points.  As a result, the Ravens increased their lead to as high as 20 points at 27-7.  Holy Family responded with a 10-0 run to come within 10 points of the lead after graduate Anjelai Hayes (Woodbury, N.J./Woodbury) knocked down a three to make the score 27-17.  Franklin Pierce quickly added back to its lead and finished the half with a 40-22 advantage.
 
* Franklin Pierce led by double-digits the rest of the game and increased its lead to as many as 22 points early in the fourth quarter.  A layup basket by Rylee Skinner gave the Ravens a 62-40 lead at the 8:08 mark.

* Hayes led the Tigers with a team-high 12 points to go along with five rebounds and two assists.
 
* Sophomore Jenn Kokolus (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) finished with nine points and a game-high nine rebounds. Graduate student Megan Hughes (Point Pleasant Boro, N.J./Point Pleasant Boro) also scored nine points.
 
* Franklin Pierce's Emma Carter led all scorers with 24 points to go along with eight rebounds.  Skinner came off the bench and provided the Ravens with 20 points.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the seventh meeting between Holy Family and Franklin Pierce since the start of the 2008 season.  The Tigers are now 1-6 versus the Ravens in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Holy Family returns to action on Sunday as the Tigers close out the Conference Challenge versus host Staten Island.  Game time is set for 3 p.m.
