Tigers Fall Short to Panthers in Regional Showdown

How It Happened

* The match came down to one final set after both teams split the first four sets. Adelphi opened the final set with a 5-1 run to take early control.  The Tigers would cut the Panthers lead to three points on five separate occasions but each time Adelphi responded with a point.  After a kill by junior Allyssa Hartney (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) made the score 10-7, Adelphi followed with four straight points to grab its biggest lead of the set at 14-7.  The Tigers rallied with three unanswered points to cut the score to 14-10, but the Panthers, needing only one more point to win the match, finished the set with kill by Delaney Kiendra.

* Holy Family dropped the first set, 25-23, but bounced back with a dramatic, 27-25, triumph in set number two to tie the match at 1-1.  In a set that could have gone either way, the Tigers found a way to pull one out at the end.  Trailing 24-23 and facing a potential 2-0 deficit in the match, Hartney recorded back-to-back kills to give the Tigers a 25-24 edge.  After a Holy Family service error tied the set at 25-25, the Tigers received another kill by Hartney and then an attack error by the Panthers gave the Tigers the set two win.

* Adelphi cruised to a 25-16 victory in the third set but the Tigers once again rallied to tie the match once more.  Holy Family opened the fourth set with a 7-2 run.  Adelphi eventually caught up to the Tigers and grabbed its first lead of the set at 9-8.  From there, neither team would grab a lead larger than two points in a true back-and-forth battle.  Adelphi had a chance to close out the match leading 24-23 but a service error tied the score and a service ace by senior Camille Johnson (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) gave the Tigers a 25-24 lead and a chance to seal the set.  However, two straight points by the Panthers gave the visitors another opportunity to close things out but the Tigers took advantage of back-to-back miscues by Adelphi to lead 27-26.  The Panthers tied the set at 27-27 with a kill from Anna Oden before the Tigers recorded the final two points of the set to win, 29-27.

Inside the Box Score

* It was almost a career-night for Hartney as she finished with a match-high 23 kills; one shy of her career-high.  Senior Tayana Bennett (Philadelphia, Pa./Hill-Freedom World Academy) also came up shy of another career-night as she totaled 12 kills; one short of her career-high set in the previous match versus Dominican.

* Senior Morgan Silks (Norristown, Pa./Archbishop John Carroll) finished with 50 assists and is well in striking distance of the program's all-time assists record.  Silks now has 3,862 career assists; 27 shy of Aimee Drabyn's (2007-2010) program record of 3,889.  Silks also recorded 16 digs to increase her career total to 985; 15 shy of 1,000.

* Sophomore Faith Zehnder (Lakewood, Colo./Lakewood) tied her career-high with a team-best 26 digs.  She hit 26 digs earlier this season against Bentley University.

* Senior Carly Covington (Delmar, Md./Delmar) totaled nine kills to go along with 19 digs.

* Junior Maeve Boylan (Ridley Township, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) and freshman Morgan Steck (Lakewood, Colo./Lakewood) each recorded double-digit digs.  Boylan finished with 12, while Steck added 10.

* Adelphi had four players reach double-digit kills, including Oden (17), Katie Schloss (16), Kiendra (15) and Samantha Meehan (14).  Kambel Fiser recorded a match-high 60 assists to go along with seven kills and 16 digs.  Jamie Yonker totaled a match-high 38 digs.

Winning Streak Snapped
