PFX Spring Games: Day Two Recap



Clermont, Fla. – The Holy Family University softball resumed play down in Florida at the PFX Spring Games and faced Gannon University (L, 3-1) and Glenville State College (L, 7-3) on Thursday at the Auburndale Complex.

Game Recap vs. Gannon
 
* Lisa Szajn gave Gannon a 1-0 lead after a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the second inning.  The Knights added another run in the third to double their lead at 2-0.
 
* Junior Taylor Nichols (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) drove in the Tigers first and only run in the top half of the fourth.  After freshman Madison Twaddell (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) reached on an error, Nichols followed with a double to make the score 2-1.
 
* Gannon capped the scoring with one final run in the fifth off a single by Taylor Wilp.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Sophomore Ashley Remington (Collegeville, Pa./Pope John Paul II) (0-2) went the distance for the Tigers.  She scattered six hits through six innings of work allowing three runs.  Remington struck out three batters on the day.
 
* Gannon's Kennedy DeMatteis (3-4) picked up her third win of the season as she struck out 10 batters in a complete game performance.  DeMatteis allowed one unearned run on one hit.
 
Game Recap vs. Glenville State

* Glenville State wasted no time jumping on the scoreboard as Mackenzie Martinelli connected on a three-run homer in the top half of the first to give the Pioneers a 3-0 lead.
 
* Holy Family got one of the runs back in the bottom of the first when sophomore Elaina Hansen (Mullica Hill, N.J./Clearview Regional) drove in junior Heather Bogardus (Ridley, Pa./Ridley) with a single to right field.  Hansen's run scoring hit made the score 3-1.
 
* The Pioneers tacked on another run in the second and then came up with three more runs in the third to grab a 7-1 lead. Glenville State recorded three run scoring hits in the inning.
 
* Holy Family made it a 7-3 game in the bottom of the fifth when Hansen launched a two-run homer run for her first long ball of the season.  Hansen's home run turned out to be the final runs scored in the game.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Hansen went 2-for-3 for the Tigers and drove in all three runs on the afternoon. 
 
* Senior Tyler Beccari (Havertown, Pa./Haverford (Temple)) also had a multiple hit game as she went 2-of-3 with a run scored.
 
* Tori Ward (4-1) went the distance for Glenville State to pick up the win.  She struck out three batters while allowing three runs on seven hits. Ward also went 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI.
 
* Glenville's Paranda Uber went a perfect 4-of-4 at the plate, while Martinelli went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the third meeting between Holy Family and Gannon in the all-time series.  The Tigers are now 1-2 versus the Knights.  Holy Family and Glenville were meeting for the first time.
 
Next Up
Holy Family returns to action Friday morning as the Tigers face Wheeling University (10:15 a.m.) and Clarion University (12:30 p.m.) in non-conference contests.
