PFX Spring Games: Day Three Recap



Clermont, Fla. – The Holy Family University softball team picked up its first two wins of the season as the Tigers came away with victories over Wheeling University (W, 6-3) and Clarion University (W, 14-0) down in Florida at the PFX Spring Games on Friday at the Auburndale Complex.

Game Recap vs. Wheeling
 
* Sophomore Elaina Hansen (Mullica Hill, N.J./Clearview Regional) gave the Tigers an early first inning lead as she launched a two-run shot over the leftfield fence for her second home run of the season.  Senior Julia Vizza (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert), who reached on an infield single prior, scored on the play.
 
* The score remained 2-0 until the fifth when junior Heather Bogardus (Ridley, Pa./Ridley) increased the Tigers lead to 3-0 with a two-out single up the middle to score senior Tyler Beccari (Havertown, Pa./Haverford (Temple)).
 
* The Tigers added another two runs in the top half of the sixth.  Hansen, freshman Madison Twaddell (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) and junior Taylor Nichols (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) all reached base with three straight hits.  Nichols was credited with a run scoring single and Twaddell scored off a wild pitch to make the score 5-0 in favor of the Tigers.
 
* Wheeling finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of runs to cut the deficit to 5-2.
 
* Holy Family added one more run in the seventh off a single from Hansen before Wheeling capped the scoring in the bottom of the inning with a single run.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Hansen went 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs and three RBI.  Vizza and Nichols each had multiple hits in the game each going 2-for-4.
 
* Sophomore Ashley Remington (Collegeville, Pa./Pope John Paul II) (1-2) earned the win as she held Wheeling to just three runs in a seven-inning complete game.  She struck out three on the morning.
 
* Heather Pinney went 2-for-3 with one run and a RBI for Wheeling, while Autumn Oehlstrom went 2-of-4 with a run.
 
Game Recap vs. Clarion
 
* The Holy Family offense really came to life in the second game of the day versus Clarion.  The Tigers plated nine runs in the bottom of the second inning after totaling seven hits in the frame.  Hansen highlighted the inning with a three-run home run; her second long ball on the day and third of the season.  Beccari and Bogardus each had two run singles prior to Hansen's three-run homer.
 
* The Tigers really put the game out of reach in the third, scoring five more runs to take a commanding 14-0 lead after only three innings.  Sophomores Abigail Smith (Elkton, Md./Red Lion Christian Academy) and Jasmine Martinez (Riverside, Calif./Riverside Polytechnic) both had run scoring hits in the inning.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Sophomore Stephanie Uribe (San Diego, Calif./Liberty Charter High) (1-0) picked up her first win of the season as she held Clarion to just five hits in a complete five-inning game.  She struck out a pair of batters and issued zero walks in the game.
 
* Hansen went 1-for-3 in the game and totaled four RBI.  She finished the day with four hits, including a pair of home runs and seven RBI between the two victories.
 
* Nichols went 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI, while Bogardus finished 2-of-2 with two runs and two RBI.
 
* Beccari also had multiple hits in the game going 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.
 
All-Time Series
Holy Family and Wheeling were meeting for just the fourth time all-time and the first time since 2013.  The Tigers are now 1-3 in the all-time series.  Holy Family and Clarion were meeting for the first time since 2009 as the Tigers are now 3-0 in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Holy Family wraps up its Florida trip tomorrow with another pair of non-conference games.  The Tigers will face Stonehill College (9 a.m.) and Urbana University (11:15 a.m.) at the Auburndale Complex Field 1.
