Tigers Fall Short at Georgian Court



Lakewood, N.J. – The Holy Family University men's basketball team overcame a 13-point second half deficit but were unable to hold off Georgian Court University as the Lions came away with a 66-59 victory in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action on Tuesday night at the GCU Wellness Center.

Game Recap
 
* Holy Family trailed by as many as 13 points in the second half after Caleb Bowser, who scored a game-high 37 points for the Lions, split a pair of free throws to open the scoring in the half.  Bowser's free throw gave the Lions a 35-22 advantage.
 
* Over the next seven minutes the Tigers chipped away at the Lions' lead and eventually grabbed the lead away for the first time in the game.  Sophomore Eric Esposito (Langhorne, Pa./Conwell Egan) knocked down a jumper to give the Tigers a 39-38 edge.  The lead was short-lived as the Lions regained the lead after Bowser converted a pair of free throws.
 
* Both teams would exchange leads multiple times as the half progressed.  Esposito, who scored a team-high 28 points for the Tigers, drained a three-pointer at the 7:32 mark to give the Tigers' their final lead of the game at 46-44.  On the next possession the Lions tied the game and then took the lead after a three-pointer by Jelani Jackson two possessions later.
 
* Holy Family came within two points (53-51) of the lead with 3:29 to play in regulation, but the Lions followed with an 8-0 run to increase the lead to double-digits with less than a minute to play. The Tigers were able to come as close as four points in the final minute after freshman Nate Conyer (Pemberton, N.J./BCIT Medford) drilled a three to make the score 63-59.  However, time was against the Tigers with only :14 seconds left on the clock. The Lions were able to hold off the Tigers with free throws converting 3-of-4 from the line in the final 10 seconds.
 
News and Notes
 
* Esposito recorded his sixth double-double of the season and his fourth in the last five games after totaling a team-high 28 points to go along with 13 rebounds.  He shot 10-of-19 from the field, including five three-pointers. 
 
* Senior Branden Aughburns (Queens, N.Y./The Canterbury School (Hampton Univ.)) totaled eight points and 11 rebounds, while blocking a pair of shots on defense. Junior Brendan Hoban (Watertown, Mass./Millbrook) added seven points, seven boards and three assists.
 
* Bowser recorded a double-double for the Lions as he netted a game-high 37 points (13-19 FG) to go along with 10 points.  Bryce Council added 10 points and six boards, while Alonzo Ortiz-Traylor totaled eight points and a team-high 12 rebounds.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the 14th meeting between Holy Family and Georgian Court since the start of the 2013-14 season.  The Tigers are now 11-3 versus the Lions in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Holy Family returns to the Campus Center Gymnasium on Saturday, Feb. 8 as the Tigers host Felician University in a CACC contest.  Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
