Tigers Edged by Spartans in Season Opener



Ewing, N.J. – The Holy Family University women's lacrosse team dropped its season opener versus St. Thomas Aquinas College, 19-15, in a non-conference regional matchup at The College of New Jersey's Lacrosse Complex on Thursday afternoon.

Game Recap
 
* Holy Family trailed 7-3 late in the first half in which saw 17 total goals by both teams.  Freshman Lynn Hardy (Audubon, N.J./Camden Catholic) scored her first collegiate goal at the 6:42 mark to jump start a run that featured five unanswered goals scored by four different players. Sophomore Tatceyana Pulley (Edgewater Park, N.J./Burlington City) came away with two goals during the rally, including the final goal that gave the Tigers an 8-7 lead with 2:23 to play until halftime.
 
* St. Thomas Aquinas finished the half scoring that final two goals to regain the lead at 9-8 entering halftime.  Kaitlyn Gutenberger, who scored a game-high seven goals, tallied both goals to end the half.
 
* In the second half the Spartan scored the first three goals to increase their lead to 12-8.  The Tigers then went on to score three of the next four goals of the game to come within two goals of the lead at 13-11 at the 23:35 mark.
 
* St. Thomas Aquinas made a mini run with three straight goals to increase its lead to five after Gutenberger recorded her seventh score of the game with less than 20 minutes to play.  In turn the Tigers responded as sophomore Mackenzie Santucci (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington Regional (RCBC)), Pulley and senior Casey Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./Little Flower) all scored over an eight-minute span to make the score 16-14.
 
* The Spartans scored at the seven-minute mark before Santucci tallied the Tigers final goal of the game that made the score 17-15 with 5:38 to play.  The Spartans sealed the victory with two goals in the final three minutes.
 
News and Notes
 
* Freshman Courtney Wolf (Northfield, N.J./Mainland Regional) led the Tigers with four goals on the afternoon in her collegiate debut. Santucci also tallied four points on three goals and one assist in her Tigers debut.
 
* Pulley finished the game with three goals, while Brown (2) and Hardy (2) each recorded multiple goals in the game. Brown and Hardy also each totaled seven draws as the Tigers held a 22-14 edge on draw controls over the Spartans.
 
* Defensively, freshman Sarah Hartigan (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert's) totaled four groundballs and caused three turnovers, while sophomore Yasmine Machlof (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Lower Moreland) recorded three ground balls and three caused turnovers.
 
* Freshman goalkeeper Caitlyn Musick (Bensalem, Pa./Conwell-Egan Catholic) finished with eight saves in her collegiate debut after facing 33 shots by the Spartans.
 
* Gutenberger finished with a game-high seven goals and controlled a game-high eight draws for the Spartans. Arielle Rodriguez finished the day with four goals to go along with a game-high six groundballs. Goalkeeper Laura Delorenzo picked up the win as she made 17 saves in net.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked just the fourth meeting between Holy Family and St. Thomas Aquinas since the start of the 2009 season.  The Tigers are now 0-4 in the all-time series with the Spartans.
 
Next Up
Holy Family returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 23 as the Tigers travel to face Molloy College in another non-conference regional contest.  Game time is set for 1 p.m. in Rockville Centre, N.Y.
