Tigers Clinch Postseason Berth With Win Over Caldwell



Philadelphia, Pa. – The Holy Family University women's basketball team clinched a spot in next month's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) tournament after defeating Caldwell University, 56-52, on Saturday afternoon from inside the Campus Center Gymnasium.

Game Recap
 
* Holy Family broke a 31-31 tie at the 3:28 mark of the third quarter after scoring the final five points of the quarter to take a 36-31 advantage into the final frame. Senior Casey Schweitzer (Lagrangeville, N.Y./Arlington), who was one of three Tigers to record double-doubles, accounted for all five points after scoring a layup and then draining a three-pointer on the ensuing possession.
 
* In the fourth, the Tigers continued their run scoring seven of the first nine points to open the quarter.  Senior Elizabeth Radley (Hainesport, N.J./Bishop Eustace Prep) capped the run with a jumper to give the Tigers a double-digit lead at 43-33 at the 7:58 mark.
 
* Caldwell made things interesting in the final minute of regulation.  The Tigers led 56-48 with :23 seconds remaining before Caldwell cut the deficit down to four points.  Alessia Smaldone knocked down a three-pointer with seven seconds left to make the score 56-52.  Jessica Wagoner recorded a steal on defense on the following Tigers possession but time ran out before the Cougars could attempt a shot.
 
* Both teams scored 22 points each in the first half with neither time holding a lead larger than three points. The first half featured two lead changes and five ties.
 
News and Notes
 
* Holy Family had three players record double-doubles in the victory.  Radley recorded her team-leading sixth double-double of the season with 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.  Freshman Moe Moore (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) came away with her fifth double-double of the season and her third in her last four games.  Moore totaled a team-high 15 points to go along with 12 rebounds.  Schweitzer recorded her first career double-double with 10 points and a career-high 11 rebounds.
 
* Graduate Mia Ehling (Linden, N.J./Holmdel (St. Francis)) scored in double-figures with 12 points.
 
* Smaldone led the Cougars with a game-high 18 points to go along with a game-high eight assists.  She also had four boards and three steals.  Rebecca Morrison added 12 points, while Tina Lebron finished with 10 points.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 26th meeting between Holy Family and Caldwell since the start of the 2002-03 season.  The Tigers are now 20-6 versus the Cougars snapping a five-game losing streak in the series with the win.
 
Postseason Bound
Holy Family is heading back to the CACC Tournament after a year hiatus.  The Tigers are currently second in the South Division. A win versus the University of the Sciences on Tuesday and pending the results of other games in the division that night would secure a quarterfinal home game for the Tigers.
 
Next Up
Holy Family returns to action on Tuesday, Feb. 18 to as the Tigers travel to face city rival and nationally ranked USciences.  Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
