Tigers Overpower Cougars Late to Record Victory



Philadelphia, Pa. – The Holy Family University men's basketball made a late surge in the second half to finishing off visiting Caldwell University in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action by the score of 69-51 on Saturday afternoon at the Campus Center Gymnasium.

Game Recap
 
* Holy Family trailed by as many as eight points after Caldwell's Eric Johnson-Alford converted a pair of free throws to give the Cougars a 43-35 lead at the 11:53 mark.  The Tigers responded with a three-pointer by junior Brendan Hoban (Watertown, Mass./Millbrook) before the Cougars converted another pair of free throws to make it a 45-38 game.
 
* Over the next eight-plus minutes the Tigers turned a seven-point deficit into a 16-point advantage.  Holy Family went on a 32-8 run to take full control of the game.  Senior Branden Aughburns (Queens, N.Y./The Canterbury School (Hampton Univ.)) put an exclamation mark on the rally with a dunk off an assist from sophomore Eric Esposito (Langhorne, Pa./Conwell Egan).  Aughburns started the play with a block on the other end of the court.
 
* During the Tigers' rally, the team knocked down four three-pointers while the defense held Caldwell without a single field goal.  The Cougars scored all eight of their points from the free throw line with their last made field goal coming at the 14:40 mark of the half.  Caldwell shot 0-of-17 from the field in the final 14:40 of regulation.
 
News and Notes
 
* Holy Family had five players score in double-figures with Aughburns and junior Devon Moore (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic (Merrimack College0) leading the way with 16 points each.  Aughburns added seven rebounds and was tremendous on the defensive end with six blocks and one steal.  Moore added five assists and two boards to go along with four three-pointers.
 
* Esposito recorded his seventh double-double of the season with 13 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.  He also blocked four shots on defense and had three steals.
 
* Freshman Nate Conyer (Pemberton, N.J./BCIT Medford) finished with 12 points; one shy of his season-high set in the previous game versus Goldey-Beacom College.
 
* Junior Brendan Hoban (Watertown, Mass./Millbrook) came off the bench and supplied the Tigers with 12 points and a game-high eight assists.
 
* Caldwell's Anthony Cooper scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Cougars.  Ned Ogoemesim added 11 points.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 25th meeting between Holy Family and Caldwell since the start of the 2002-03 season.  The Tigers are now 16-8 versus the Cougars in that span in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Holy Family returns to action on Tuesday, Feb. 18 as the Tigers travel to face city rival University of the Sciences in a CACC contest. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
