Tigers Split on Final Day of Wildcat Invitational



Newark, Del. - The Holy Family University women's volleyball team split its final two matches on the last day of the Wildcat Invitational hosted by Wilmington University on Saturday.  The Tigers dropped their first match of the day to Le Moyne College, 3-1, before bouncing back to defeat American International College in five sets, 3-2.

Match Recap vs. Le Moyne
 
* Holy Family opened the first set with a 13-3 run after taking advantage of five errors by the Dolphins.  The Tigers also made good on three service aces to help fuel the opening surge.  The Tigers would go on to take the first set by the score of 25-20 after totaling 14 kills as a team.
 
* In the next two sets it was the Dolphins that would be on top of a close pair of sets.  Holy Family led set two by the score of 16-10 before Le Moyne went on a 7-0 run. From there both teams went back-and-forth down the stretch.  With the second set tied 23-23, back-to-back errors by the Tigers gave the Dolphins the win. 
 
* In the third set the Tigers jumped out early with a 7-1 advantage. Holy Family led majority of the way before a 5-0 run by the Dolphins gave them a 23-21 lead.  The Tigers would tie the set with back-to-back points thanks to a kill by freshman Skylar Osenkarski (Harding, Pa./Holy Redeemer) and an ace by sophomore Casee Bryan (Vincentown, N.J./Seneca).  Both teams would exchange points to tie the set up at 25-25, before Le Moyne recorded back-to-back kills to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
 
* In the fourth set the Tigers led early and often but the Dolphins once again rallied late.  Le Moyne scored five of the final six points of the set to clinch a 25-21 victory in the set and the match.
 
Match Recap vs. American Int'l
 
* In a rematch of last year's East Region Final, American Int'l jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the match after taking the first two sets.
 
* Holy Family would go on to tie the match with back-to-back wins in the third and fourth set.  The Tigers produced 29 kills in the two sets.
 
* In the fifth set the Tigers came up with a big rally after AIC tied the set 3-3.  The Tigers recorded five straight points before Yellow Jackets picked up a point off a kill by Lyanne Hernandez.  Holy Family responded with four more unanswered points capped by back-to-back kills from Osenkarski.  Leading 12-4, AIC made things interesting scoring eight of the next nine points to make the score 13-12.  Holy Family received a key kill by senior Gianna Pesognelli (Phoenix, Ariz./Pinnacle) and an attack error by AIC gave the Tigers the 15-12 victory.
 
News and Notes
 
* Junior Carly Covington (Delmar, Md./Delmar) recorded 16 assists in each match as she finished the day with 32 total kills.  She also totaled 14 digs against the Dolphins and 10 versus the Yellow Jackets.
 
* Freshman Allyssa Hartney (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) had a big day offensively as well as she combined for 26 kills; 13 in each match setting a new season-high.
 
* Sophomore Morgan Silks (Norristown, Pa./Archbishop John Carroll) recorded a season-high 53 assists against AIC.  It marked her third 50-plus assist performance in the last four matches.  Silks totaled 44 assists against the Dolphins.  She also totaled 25 digs between the two matches.
 
* Senior Jillian Boyle (North Andover, Mass./North Andover (Rivier College)) recorded a season-high 23 digs in the win against the Yellow Jackets.  She finished with 17 in the opener against Le Moyne.
 
* Osenkarski filled the stat sheet with eight kills, four aces and three digs against AIC. 
 
* Freshman Mainerys Munoz (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) totaled double-digit digs versus AIC as she finished with 10.
 
* As a team, Holy Family recorded a season-high 61 kills in the win over American International.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the eighth meeting between Holy Family and Le Moyne since the start of the 2004 season.  The Tigers are now 7-1 versus the Dolphins in the All-Time series.  Holy Family improved to 3-4 all-time versus AIC with the win. 
 
Next Up
Holy Family returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 18 as the Tigers host Georgian Court University in their home opener as well as the first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match of the season.  Match time is set for 6 p.m.  Prior to the start of the match, Holy Family will recognize the 2018 CACC Champions with a banner unveiling ceremony.
