Tigers Drop Opener to Spartans, 16-5



Sparkill, N.Y. - The Holy Family University women's lacrosse team dropped its season opener to St. Thomas Aquinas College by the score of 16-5 on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at Spartan Field.

How It Happened
 
* St. Thomas Aquinas scored the game's first four goals and never looked back.  The Spartans held the Tigers scoreless for the first 14-plus minutes of the game before junior Casey Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./Little Flower) lit up the scoreboard with a goal at the 15:50 mark. 
 
* The Spartans would go on to score four of the next five goals to lead 8-2 with less than five minutes to play in the half.  The home squad entered halftime with a 10-3 advantage.
 
* In the second half the Spartans scored the first four goals again to open a half.  The Tigers were outscored, 6-2, in the final half.
 
News and Notes
 
* Brown led the Tigers' offense with two goals in the game while picking up three ground balls.
 
* Freshman Yasmin Machlof tallied her first collegiate goal with a first half score, while fellow freshman Emily Dalton (Philadelphia, Pa./Philadelphia Academy) recorded her first collegiate assist off a goal by senior Dana Trevito (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional).
 
* Freshman Maura Coleman (Lower Moreland, Pa./Little Flower) led the team with four ground balls.
 
* The Spartans had two players score a game-high four goals in Kaitlyn Gutenberger and Leanna Lobbi. 
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the third meeting between Holy Family and St. Thomas Aquinas since the start of the 2009 season and the first since 2014.  The Spartans are 3-0 versus the Tigers in the series.
 
Next Up
Holy Family returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 27 as the Tigers travel to face nationally ranked No. 18 NYIT in a non-conference contest.  Game time is set for 2 p.m. in Old Westbury, N.Y.
