Tigers Fall Short in East Region Semifinals



Rockville Centre, N.Y. – The Holy Family University women's volleyball team saw its season come to an end after falling short in the NCAA Division II East Region semifinals to third-seeded the University of Bridgeport by the score of 3-0 on Friday evening at Molloy College's Quealy Gymnasium.

Match Recap
 
* Defensively, Bridgeport limited the Tigers to just 23 kills the entire match, while collecting 43 kills themselves on the offensive side of the ball.  The Purple Knights opened the match with 14 kills in the first set to go along with a .367-attack percentage. Bridgeport jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the match with victories in the first and second sets by the scores of 25-11 and 25-13 respectively.
 
* In the third set the Tigers battled back and came within two points of the Bridgeport lead late.  With the Purple Knights leading 23-18, the Tigers took advantage of an attack error and back-to-back kills by freshman Allyssa Hartney (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) that made the score 23-21. After a timeout by Bridgeport, the Purple Knights were able to regroup and received back-to-back kills from Amanda Hennemann and Amanda Keller to hold off the Tigers attempt to extend the match.
 
News and Notes
 
* Junior Carly Covington (Delmar, Md./Delmar) finished with seven kills to go along with 12 digs.  Covington finishes the season with a career-high 507 kills tying Jennifer O'Connor for fourth most kills in a single season in program history.  O'Connor totaled 507 kills in 2007.
 
* Senior Jillian Boyle (North Andover, Mass./North Andover (Rivier College)) totaled a team-high 13 kills in the match as she capped her season with 536 digs setting becoming the first player in program history to record three seasons of 500-plus digs.  Boyle finishes her three-year career at Holy Family with 1,602 career digs; fourth most all-time.
 
* Sophomore Morgan Silks (Norristown, Pa./Archbishop John Carroll) finished the match with 20 assists to surpass 1,400 on the season.  Silks finished with exactly 1,402 assists and is the only player in program history to record back-to-back 1,400 assists seasons.  She'll enter her junior season with 2,899 career assists; third most all-time.
 
* Senior Gianna Pesognelli (Phoenix, Ariz./Pinnacle) finishes her career as the program's all-time leader in block assists with 206.  Pesognelli also owns the best attack percentage in program history at .326 surpassing Sarah Ambach (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) (2010-13) who finished her career with a .303 attack percentage. Pesognelli also holds four of the top seven spots for best attack percentage in a single season, including her career-high from this season of .367-percent.
 
* Bridgeport's Morgan Knight and Emily Burford each finished with a match-high nine kills.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked just the fifth meeting between Holy Family and Bridgeport and the first since the 2010 season.  The Purple Knights are now 5-0 versus the Tigers in the all-time series.
 
Historical Perspective
In the last two seasons the Tigers have compiled a win-loss record of 56-16; the best two-year stretch in program history.  Holy Family is also the first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) women's volleyball program to reach the NCAA Division II East Region semifinals in back-to-back years.
