Tigers Defeat City Rival Devils in CACC Opener



Philadelphia, Pa. – The Holy Family University men's basketball team extended its winning streak to three games after defeating city rival the University of the Sciences by the score of 75-74 to open Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play on Tuesday night from inside the Campus Center Gymnasium.

Game Recap
 
* In a game that featured 28 lead changes and 18 ties it was the Tigers that grabbed the final lead of the game with eight minutes to play.  After a jumper by the Devils' Javon Gordon made the score 62-61, junior Brendan Hoban (Watertown, Mass./Millbrook) followed with a three-pointer to give the Tigers a 64-62 advantage.  Two possessions late Hoban struck again with another three to increase the lead to 67-62 with less than seven minutes to play.
 
* The Devils came within one point of the lead twice in the final two minutes.  Jordan White made a pair of free throws that made the score 73-72, but on the ensuing possession outside a timeout senior Branden Aughburns (Queens, N.Y./The Canterbury School (Hampton Univ.)) knocked down a jumper to increase the Tigers' lead to three points.
 
* Two possessions late White scored a basket to once again bring the Devils to within one point at 75-74 with :23 seconds remaining in regulation. The Devils were forced to foul sending the Tigers to the free throw line.  Junior Devon Moore (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic (Merrimack College0) missed the front end of a one-and-one as White grabbed the defensive board for the Devils.  However, Hoban came up with a steal on the defensive end with two seconds left allowing the clock to run out without the Devils coming up with a potential game-winning shot.
 
* Holy Family overcame an early eight-point deficit in the first half with the Devils leading 15-7 at the 14:36 mark. The Tigers would eventually tie the game at 20-20 thanks to a 13-5 surge.  From there both teams would battle back-and-forth and would enter the locker rooms at halftime tied at 37-37.
 
News and Notes
 
* Aughburns continued his hot streak as he totaled 25 points to lead the Tigers.  It marked his third 20-plus point performance in his last four games.  Aughburns finished 12-of-17 from the field and also totaled five rebounds and three blocks.
 
* Senior Vincenzo Dalessandro (Levittown, Pa./Conwell Egan (Pace Univ.)) recorded his first double-double of the season as he finished the night with 12 points and a season-high 14 rebounds. 
 
* Hoban also recorded a double-double, his second of the year, after totaling a season-high 16 points and 10 assists.  He shot 7-of-10 from the field and was 2-of-3 from deep range.
 
* Jordan led the Devils with a game-high 27 points to go along with nine rebounds.  He shot 9-of-15 from the field and knocked down 5-of-9 from deep range.  Thomas Melonja added 23 points (11-23 FG).
 
Next Up
Holy Family returns to action tomorrow night as the Tigers host New York Tech in a non-conference contest. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
