Tigers Eliminate Bears; Advance to CACC Semifinals



Philadelphia, Pa. – The Holy Family University women's volleyball team came away with a 3-1 victory over Bloomfield College, the third seed from the North Division, in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) quarterfinals on Tuesday evening from inside the Campus Center Gymnasium.

Match Recap
 
* Bloomfield took the first set and capitalized off miscues by the Tigers that led to 14 points for the Bears.  Despite the errors, Holy Family kept things close but were unable to overcome the Bears who took the set, 25-13.
 
* In the second set the Tigers though bounced back and totaled a match-high 16 kills to go along with only three errors in the set.  With Bloomfield leading 3-2 early on the Tigers rallied with a 12-2 run to take a commanding 14-5 lead.  The Tigers took the set, 25-19, to tie the match at 1-1.
 
* In the third set the Tigers overpowered the Bears once again with 16 kills while the defense held Bloomfield to just six kills in the entire set.  Holy Family took the third set with ease, 25-14, to grab the 2-1 advantage in the match.  The Tigers went on to take the fourth set with a 25-18 while holding the Bears to only six kills again.  After committing 12 attack errors in the first set, the Tigers totaled 16 attack errors the final three sets combined.
 
News and Notes
 
* Junior Carly Covington (Delmar, Md./Delmar) made history as she recorded her 1,000th career kill early on in the second set to break a 3-3 tie at the time.  Covington becomes the seventh player in program history to reach the 1,000 kill milestone.  She's also the fourth player in program history to record both 1,000 digs and 1,000 kills in her career.  Covington finished the match with 16 kills and 14 digs.  She now has 1,011 kills and 1,037 digs in her career.
 
* Freshman Allyssa Hartney (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) recorded a match-high 17 kills to lead the Tigers attack.  Junior Camille Johnson (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) also recorded double-digit kills as she finished the night with 10 kills to go along with two solo blocks.
 
* Senior Gianna Pesognelli (Phoenix, Ariz./Pinnacle) added nine kills while committing zero errors on 15 attempts to record a .600 attack percentage.
 
* Sophomore Morgan Silks (Norristown, Pa./Archbishop John Carroll) finished with 46 assists to record a match-high and also came through with 14 digs to tie the team lead with Covington.
 
* Freshman Mainerys Munoz (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) totaled 12 digs and two aces, while senior Jillian Boyle (North Andover, Mass./North Andover (Rivier College)) collected 10 digs and in the process surpassed 1,500 in her career at Holy Family.  Boyle now has 1,504 career digs to pass former standout Chase Wassel (North Wales, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) for fifth most in program history.
 
* Danielle Quintanar led the Bears with 10 kills to go along with 13 digs.  Junelly Marrero finished with a match-high 22 digs.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the 24th meeting between Holy Family and Bloomfield since the start of the 2003 season.  The Tigers are now 16-8 versus the Bears in the all-time series having won the last five meetings.
 
The Streak Continues
The win over the Bears also extended the Tigers season-long winning streak to 15 straight matches.
 
Tigers in the CACC Tournament
Holy Family is advancing to the CACC semifinals for the third straight season.  The Tigers improved their record in the conference tournament to 11-10 all-time.
 
Next Up
Holy Family will be serving as host of the 2019 CACC semifinals and finals.  The Tigers will face Felician University, top-seed from the North, on Saturday in the later semifinal match starting at 3:30 p.m.  The earlier semifinal match features the top overall seed in Georgian Court University versus the second seed from the North, Caldwell University.  The Lions and Cougars will face off at 1 p.m.  The two semifinal winners will advance to the CACC Final on Sunday (12 p.m.).
