Tigers Hold Off Lions in Home Opener, 84-82



Philadelphia, Pa. – The Holy Family University men's basketball team had five players score in double-figures as the Tigers came away with an 84-82 victory over Lincoln University in non-conference action on Thursday night inside the Campus Center Gymnasium.  The win marked the first career victory for first year head coach Ryan Haigh.

Game Recap
 
* It was a three-point shootout at the Campus Center as both teams combined for 25 made three-pointers.  The Tigers made 13 (13-37) on the night, while the Lions knocked down 12 (12-30).
 
* Holy Family erased a seven-point deficit midway through the first half. Freshman subbed in for the Tigers at the 10:55 mark and within two minutes knocked down 3-of-4 from beyond the arc to jump-start the Tigers' offense.  Fleming's three with 8:47 remaining cut the deficit down to 26-25.
 
* The game went back-and-forth down the stretch of the half with the Tigers closing out the first 20 minutes with a 5-0 run to break a 39-39 tie.  Junior Brendan Hoban (Watertown, Mass./Millbrook) capped the scoring with a three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Tigers a 44-39 halftime advantage.
 
* Holy Family led by eight points after senior Vincenzo Dalessandro (Levittown, Pa./Conwell Egan (Pace Univ.)) drained a three-pointer for the first basket of the second half to give the Tigers a 47-39 lead.
 
* As the half progressed Lincoln recaptured the lead and held a two-point edge after Markus Stevenson knocked down a three and then converted a free throw for a four-point play to give the Lions a 51-49 advantage.  The Tigers followed with back-to-back three-pointers by Hoban and sophomore Kharon Randolph (Philadelphia, Pa./Haverford School) that started a 19-6 run to give Holy Family the game's first double-digit lead at 68-47 with 8:11 to play.
 
* Lincoln would cut the Tigers' lead down to two points by the 3:40 mark at 77-75, but the Tigers quickly responded five unanswered points capped by a three-pointer by junior Devon Moore (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic (Merrimack College0) to make the score 82-75 with less than three to play.
 
* Holy Family maintained the lead the rest of the way.  Lincoln made things interesting in the final seconds knocking down a three-pointer with half a second left on the clock to make the score 84-82.  The Tigers though were able to inbound to ball without issue to allow the clock expire.
 
News and Notes
 
* Holy Family, known for its three-point shooting over the years, finished the night with a season-high 13 three-pointers, while shooting a season-best .351-percent from the deep range.
 
* Sophomore Eric Esposito (Langhorne, Pa./Conwell Egan) scored a team-high 14 points off the bench as he shot 6-of-12 from the field to go along with six rebounds and three steals.
 
* Four players totaled 13 points for the Tigers, including senior Branden Aughburns (Queens, N.Y./The Canterbury School (Hampton Univ.)) (5-9FG), Hoban (4-11 FG), Moore (4-9 FG) and Dalessandro (6-12 FG). Hoban, Moore and Dalessandro all totaled six reounds.
 
* Randolph and Fleming each totaled nine points.  Randolph also added four assists.
 
* Deonta Dunlap led the Lions with a game-high 21 points off the bench.  He shot 7-of-12 from the field, including 7-of-10 of his shots coming from deep range.  Deaquan Williams recorded a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the 10th meeting between Holy Family and Lincoln dating back to the 1997 season.  The Tigers are now 8-2 versus the Lions in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Holy Family returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 16 as the Tigers host St. Thomas Aquinas College in a non-conference contest. Game time is set for 3 p.m .
