Tigers Defeat Golden Bears to Open Season



Philadelphia, Pa. – The Holy Family University women's basketball team opened the 2019-20 campaign and the Bernadette Laukaitis era on a high note as the Tigers came away with a 73-68 victory over visiting Kutztown University in a non-conference contest on Wednesday night inside the Campus Center Gymnasium.

Game Recap
 
* Holy Family outscored Kutztown, 30-18, in the fourth quarter, which turned out to be the difference in the game.  The Tigers entered the final 10 minutes trailing 49-43.  Graduate student Mia Ehling (Linden, N.J./Holmdel (St. Francis)) led the way scoring 11 of her game-high 21 points in the final quarter.  Ehling shot 3-of-4 from the field, including a perfect 3-of-3 from deep range in the final seven minutes.
 
* Junior Anjelai Hayes (Woodbury, N.J./Woodbury) hit a clutch three-pointer at the 1:52 mark to tie the game at 62-62. Both teams exchange points before Ehling knocked down a three to give the Tigers a 67-64 lead with :28 seconds left on the clock.  Kutztown responded with a quick basket outside a timeout and then Holy Family iced the game with free throws in the final :20 seconds.  The Tigers converted 4-of-4 from the line to finish off the game at 73-68.
 
* Holy Family trailed by as many as seven points midway through the second quarter with the Golden Bears leading 25-18.  Kutztown led 29-25 at the half.
 
News and Notes
 
* Holy Family shot 52.2-percent from the field and were just as impressive from beyond the arc knocking down 9-of-15 attempts.  In the fourth quarter the Tiger really turned it on shooting 8-of-11 from the field and a perfect 4-of-4 from three-point range.  The Tigers were also a near-perfect 10-of-11 from the free throw line in the quarter.
 
* Ehling led all scorers with 21 points (7-9 FG/4-4 3FG) in her first game with the Tigers. 
 
* Senior Elizabeth Radley (Hainesport, N.J./Bishop Eustace Prep) finished with 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field.  Hayes also scored in double-figures as she totaled 10 points to go along with four rebounds and three assists.
 
* Senior Casey Schweitzer (Lagrangeville, N.Y./Arlington) totaled eight points as she converted 6-of-8 from the line. Schweitzer also led the team with a game-high seven assists to go along with four rebounds.
 
* Kutztown had three players score in double-figures as Rylee Derr finished with a team-high 17 points, five assists and four steals. Brianna Tarabocchia finished with 16 points, while Karen Lapkiewicz added 10 points.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the 11th meeting between Holy Family and Kutztown dating back to the 1998 season.  The Tigers are now 10-1 versus the Golden Bears in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Holy Family returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 16 as the Tigers host Mercy College in a non-conference contest.  Game time is set for 1 p.m.
