Tigers Edge Devils in Five Sets



Philadelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University women's volleyball team went the distance with city rival University of the Sciences in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest and came away with a 3-2 victory on Tuesday night.

Match Recap
 
* Holy Family scored six of the final seven points in the fifth and decisive set to complete the season sweep over its city rival.  Trailing 10-9, the Tigers took advantage of a ball handling error by the Devils that tied the set.  Junior Camille Johnson (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) followed with a kill to give the Tigers the lead and then freshman Maeve Boylan (Ridley Township, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) recorded back-to-back aces to give the team a 13-10 advantage.  Junior Carly Covington (Delmar, Md./Delmar) notched her 24th kill of the match before the Devils halted the Tigers run with a kill from Tori Wright to make the score 14-11.  A service error on the ensuing serve by USciences gave the Tigers the 15-11 set victory.
 
* Holy Family won the second and third sets after dropping the opening set to the Devils, 25-22.  The Tigers won the second set 26-24 and then took set three by the score of 25-21.  Holy Family recorded a combined 30 kills in the two sets, including a match-high 16 in the third set.  Covington recorded 13 of her match-high 24 kills in the two sets.
 
* USciences took the fourth set by the score of 25-18 to force a fifth set.
 
News and Notes

* It was a career night for Covington as she totaled 24 kills marking the third time this season she has set a new career-best in kills.  It's also the third time in the last four matches that she has totaled 20-plus kills.  Covington also finished the night with a team-high 23 digs; two shy of her career-high.
 
* Freshman Allyssa Hartney (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) finished with 14 kills as she has recorded double-digit kills in three straight matches.
 
* Senior Gianna Pesognelli (Phoenix, Ariz./Pinnacle), fresh off recording her 1,000th career kill, finished with 11 kills to go along with eight total blocks, including seven block assists.  Her seven block assists set a career-high and brings her career total to 190; four shy of the program record. Pesognelli is currently tied with former standout Rebecca Tett (2008-11) for second on the all-time list.
 
* Senior Jillian Boyle (North Andover, Mass./North Andover (Rivier College)) totaled 20 digs on the defensive side.  She also had seven assists and a team-high four aces.
 
* Sophomore Morgan Silks (Norristown, Pa./Archbishop John Carroll) paced the offense with a match-high 46 assists to go along with 14 digs.
 
* Jade Bryant and Tori Wright each recorded 15 kills to lead the Devils' offense.  Wright also totaled a team-high 14 digs.
 
* As a team, Holy Family recorded 60 kills marking the third time this season the Tigers finished a match with 60-plus kills.
 
* The win tonight extended the Tigers' season-long winning streak to five matches.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the 35th meeting between Holy Family and USciences since the start of the 2003 season.  The Tigers have won the last seven matches in the series and are now 22-13 versus the Devils.
 
Next Up
Holy Family returns to action on Thursday, Oct. 24 as the Tigers host Goldey-Beacom College in a CACC contest.  Match time is set for 6 p.m. at the Campus Center Gymnasium.
