Tigers Split CACC DH With City Rival Rams; Marigliano Records 100th Career Hit

Philadelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University softball team split a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader at city rival Jefferson on Wednesday afternoon.  The Rams took game one, 7-1, before the Tigers salvaged the doubleheader with a 7-0-shutout victory in game two.  The split keeps both Holy Family and Jefferson tied for seventh place in the CACC standings.

How It Happened (Game 1)

* Stephanie Pepper helped her own cause as she highlighted a three-run first inning for the Rams with a two-run double down the right field line.  From there Pepper entered the pitching circle and silenced the Holy Family offense.  She held the Tigers hitless until the top of the sixth inning when sophomore Julia Vizza (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert) broke up the no-hitter with a bunt single.

* Holy Family broke up the shutout bid in the seventh inning thanks to a run scoring single by Heather Bogardus (Ridley, Pa./Ridley).  The Tigers finally got to Pepper with three singles in the inning.

* Pepper (10-7) picked up her 10th win of the season as she struck out six batters in a complete game effort.  Prior to the final innings she held the Tigers to one hit through six innings.  At the plate she went 2-for-3 with two doubles, two runs and two RBI.

How It Happened (Game 2)

* Roles were reversed in game two, as senior Koreen Orozco (Whittier, Calif./St. Paul) was lights out in the pitching circle shutting down the Jefferson offense.  Orozco limited the Rams to four hits with the first base hit not coming until the fourth inning.

* Holy Family broke a 0-0 deadlock with a five-run fourth inning.  The first four hitters reached base with junior Sam Klem (San Diego, Calif./Clairemont) and Bogardus recording run scoring hits.  Klem drove in junior Olivia Nolan (Shoreline, Wash./Shorecrest), while Bogardus plated senior Jen Trapp (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County) and Klem with a double to right field.  Senior Taylor Favinger (Deptford, N.J./Gloucester County Inst. of Tech.) capped the inning with a two-run home run to make the score 5-0.

* The Tigers added two more runs in the fifth inning with Trapp coming through with a run scoring base hit.  Bogardus recorded her third RBI of the game when she scored Trapp with a ground out to shortstop.

Game Notes

* Sophomore Kelsey Marigliano (Seaford, N.Y./Plainledge) went 2-for-4 in game two and as a result tallied her 100th career hit.  Her milestone hit came in the third inning when she singled through the left side.

* Orozco improved to 8-9 on the year in the pitching circle as she recorded her second shutout victory in her last three starts.  She is 3-0 in that span allowing just one earned run in 19.0 innings of work.

* Bogardus finished the doubleheader 2-for-7, including a double to go along with one run and four RBI.

* Nolan and Trapp each went 3-for-4 with two runs in game two.  Trapp also drove in a run in that game.

* Favinger's two-run homer in game two marked her 12th of the season and the 26th of her career.

All-Time Series
Today marked the 36th and 37th meetings between Holy Family and Jefferson (formerly Philadelphia University) since the start of the 2002 season.  The Tigers are now 22-15 versus the Rams in the all-time series.

Postseason Picture
The final two seeds for the upcoming CACC Tournament will come down to the final doubleheader of the season as the Tigers travel to face Nyack College on Saturday.  Holy Family and Jefferson are currently tied for seventh place in the standings at 12-12 with Bloomfield College currently in ninth with an 11-13 conference record.  The Tigers could claim the seventh seed in the tournament with a sweep over Nyack on Saturday. Holy Family holds the tiebreak over Jefferson due to the Tigers conference win against Caldwell University.  Holy Family could also clinch a postseason berth with a split in its season finale as long as Bloomfield loses at least one game in its doubleheader at Goldey-Beacom College.  The Bears own the tiebreak over the Tigers due to their regular season sweep.
