Favinger Ties Home Run Record as Tigers Sweep Devils

Bensalem, Pa. - Holy Family University senior Taylor Favinger (Deptford, N.J./Gloucester County Inst. of Tech.) tied the program's all-time home run record with a two-run shot in game two as the Tigers came away with their ninth straight Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory after sweeping the University of the Sciences on cold & rainy Thursday afternoon at Bensalem High School.

Game 1: Holy Family 13, USciences 3
Game 2: Holy Family 8, USciences 7
Records: Holy Family (10-24, 9-9 CACC) | USciences (8-26, 5-15 CACC)
Location: Bensalem, Pa. (Bensalem High School)

How It Happened (Game 1)

* Holy Family broke a 0-0 tie with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning thanks to a two-run double by Favinger.  However, USciences countered with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth to tie the game at 2-2.

* The Tigers broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth inning with five runs.  Freshman Taylor Nichols (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) highlighted the inning with a two-run triple.  She would later score on a triple by sophomore Kelsey Marigliano (Seaford, N.Y./Plainledge).  Sophomore Julia Vizza (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert) and senior Koreen Orozco (Whittier, Calif./St. Paul) also had run scoring hits in the inning.

* Both teams added a run in the fifth inning to make the score 8-3 entering the sixth.  Starting pitcher, junior Casey Boltersdorf (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury) retired the Devils in order in the top half of the sixth to set the tone for the innig.  The Holy Family offense plated five runs in the bottom of the inning to run rule the Devils.  With two runs already scored in the inning, junior Olivia Nolan (Shoreline, Wash./Shorecrest) capped the scoring with a three-run home run to finish off the walk-off victory.

How It Happened (Game 2)

* In the nightcap the Tigers came through late with a different type of walk-off victory.  Trailing 6-1 in the fifth, the Tigers cut the lead down to two runs thanks to two big home runs from the top of the order.  After Marigliano reached base on a two-out bunt single, Favinger stepped to the plate and connected on her 10th home run of the season and 24th of her career tying the program's all-time record.  Senior Koreen Orozco (Whittier, Calif./St. Paul) followed with a solo shot, her third of the year, to make the score 6-4.

* After allowing a run in the top half of the seventh the Tigers found themselves trailing 7-4 in their final at-bat.  With runners at first and second and on one out, Orozco singled to left field scoring both Marigliano and Favinger to cut the deficit to 7-6.  Sophomore Tyler Beccari (Havertown, Pa./Haverford (Temple)) then reached on an error after dropping down a bunt and as a result scored Orozco to tie the game.  The next two batters reached base with infield hits to load the bases still with no one out.  Vizza stepped in and drilled through the infield into left field scoring Beccari for the walk-off victory.

Game Notes

* After starting conference play 0-9 the Tigers have came away with nine straight conference victories to even their record at 9-9.  Holy Family is currently tied for the eighth and final postseason spot with city rival Jefferson.  Both teams will face one another later next week at Jefferson.

* Favinger finished 2-for-6 in the double header, including a two-run home run to go along with two runs and five RBI.  Her home run in game two tied the program's all-time home run record of 24 with former stand out Deanna Myers (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) (2010-2013).  Favinger is also now one RBI shy of tying the program's all-time record of 115 held by Holy Family Hall of Famer Sharon Brown (1996-1999).

* Marigliano went 5-for-7 in the double header and scored six times; three in each game.  Her five hits increased her career total to 94.  She'll enter her next game six hits shy of 100 for her career.

* Boltersdorf (5-8) picked up the win in both games after starting game one and entering game two in relief.  In the opener she went four innings holding the Devils to two runs on five hits while striking out two.  In game two she went 3.1 innings allowing just one run on two hits while striking out another two batters.

* Freshman Michelle Slaughter (Philadelphia, Pa./Franklin Towne Charter) recorded her first collegiate hit after leading off the bottom of the sixth inning of game one with a single up the middle.  She later stole second and scored jump-starting the team's five run inning.

* Nolan finished the doubleheader 5-for-7 after going a perfect 3-for-3 in game one.  She also totaled three runs and three RBI in the opener to go along with her eighth home run of the season and 12th of her career.

* Orozco went 5-for-8 between the two games and totaled three runs and five RBI.  Her home run in the second game marked the third of the season tying her career-high.  It was the eighth home run of her career.

* USciences' Lauren Davis went 3-for-3 in game one with a RBI.  She followed up that success with a 2-for-4 performance in game two to go along with two runs and two RBI.  Emily Torres went 3-for-4 in game two with two triples and three RBI.
