Tigers Drop Two on Opening Day



Clermont, Fla. - The Holy Family University softball team dropped its first two games of the season on day one down in sunny Florida in part of the PFX Springs games in Clermont.  The Tigers fell to University of Minnesota Duluth, 8-0, and then came up short versus nationally ranked No. 13 University of Southern Indiana, 10-5.

How It Happened (Minnesota - Duluth)
 
* The Bulldogs broke a scoreless tie in the third inning taking advantage of three Holy Family errors resulting in three runs. Jordyn Thomas and Kalynn Tilton had run scoring hits in the inning.
 
* UMD scored two more runs in the fourth thanks to a Tilton two-run double.  The Bulldogs added another run in the fifth before run-ruling the Tigers with two runs in the bottom of the fifth after a two-run single by Becky Smith.
 
How It Happened (Southern Indiana)
 
* The Screaming Eagles jumped out to a commanding lead after scoring seven runs in the first two innings.  A two-run homerun by Lindsey Barr capped a four-run second inning to give Southern Indiana a 7-1 lead.
 
* The Screaming Eagles added another run in the third to make it 8-1 before the Tigers cut the lead in half with a three-run third inning.  Senior Taylor Favinger (Deptford, N.J./Gloucester County Inst. of Tech.) and junior Sam Klem (San Diego, Calif., Clairemont) came away with run scoring singles in the inning.  Junior Hannah Miravich (Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic) was also credited with a RBI to close out the scoring.
 
* The Tigers came within three runs of the lead after Favinger drove in another run with a double in the fourth inning to make the score 8-5.  However, Southern Indiana added another pair of runs in the fifth to increase the lead to 10-5.  The Tigers were limited to just one hit in the final two innings.
 
Game Notes
 
* Favinger finished the day 4-for-7 at the plate with two RBI and one run scored… Three of her hits came in game two versus Southern Indiana.
 
* Senior Koreen Orzoco and sophomore Kelsey Marigliano (Seaford, N.Y./Plainledge) each had a pair of hits against Southern Indiana… Orozco went 2-for-4 with a run, while Marigliano finished 2-for-3 with two runs. 
 
* Sophomore Julia Vizza (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert) went 1-for-2 in both games to total two hits on the day.
 
Next Up
Holy Family will face another pair of non-conference opponents on Monday.  The Tigers will take on the top team in Division II in No. 1 Minnesota State University at 2 p.m. and will then face University of Missouri - St. Louis at 4:30 p.m.
