Tigers Split With Purple Knights; Win Game Two, 6-3

Bensalem, Pa. - The Holy Family University softball team split a non-conference doubleheader versus the University of Bridgeport on Saturday afternoon at Bensalem High School.  The Purple Knights took the opener, 13-5, in five innings before the Tigers came away with a 6-3 victory in game two.

Game 1: Bridgeport 13, Holy Family 5
Game 2: Holy Family 6, Bridgeport 3
Records: Holy Family (1-19) | Bridgeport (11-11)
Location: Bensalem, Pa. (Bensalem High School)

How It Happened (Game 1)

* An eight-run fourth inning by the Purple Knights turned out to be the difference in the game.  Already leading 4-2, Bridgeport sent 12 batters to the plate in the inning and registered six hits.  Kaira Ramon and Samantha Sabor each had two-run hits in the inning.

* Holy Family got three of the runs back in the bottom of the inning.  Senior Alyssa Cudeyro (Sicklerville, N.J./Washington Twp.) led the inning off with a home run to left field.  It marked her first of the season and fifth of her career.  Junior Olivia Nolan (Shoreline, Wash./Shorecrest) also drove in a run with a double to left field scoring senior Taylor Favinger (Deptford, N.J./Gloucester County Inst. of Tech.).

* The Purple Knights added a run in the fifth inning thanks to a double down the left field line by Kamryn Beach.  Abbigail Blanchard scored on the play as Bridgeport went on to run-rule the Tigers in five innings.

How It Happened (Game 2)

* Holy Family jumped out to an early lead thanks to a two-out solo home run by Nolan in the bottom of the first inning.  It marked her fourth home run of the season tying her career-high in a single season.

* Bridgeport answered with a pair of runs in the second to take a 2-1 lead.  The score stayed that way until the bottom of the fourth when the Tigers tied the game at 2-2.  Freshman Heather Bogardus (Ridley, Pa./Ridley) connected on a two-out single to left-center scoring senior Koreen Orozco (Whittier, Calif./St. Paul) who led the inning off with a double.

* The Purple Knights regained the lead in the top-half of the fifth after a Sabor run scoring double made the score 3-2.  However, the lead was short lived as the Tigers responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning.  Favinger led the inning off with a solo home run to dead center field.  It was her fourth of the year and 18th of her career.  With one out in the inning the Tigers recorded three straight singles to load the bases.  A botched infield fly rule play advanced each runner one base as the Tigers took the lead.  Senior Jen Trapp (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County) then came through with a two-run single to give the Tigers a 6-3 advantage.

*  Orozco held the Purple Knights in check in the final two innings striking out a combined three batters in the innings to secure the win.

Game Notes

* Cudeyro went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate in game one, including a double and a home run.  She's now hitting a career-high .333.

* Favinger's home run in game two marked the 18th of her career as she now moves into third place in the program's all-time home run list.  She trails only Deanna Myers (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) (24) and Cassandra Fitzgerald-Black (21) for most home runs in program history.

* Orozco (1-7) picked up her 36th career victory after going the distance for the Tigers in game two.  She held the Purple Knights to three runs while striking out a season-high seven batters.  The win also moved her into second place for most career wins in the program's NCAA Division II era.  Jody Searfoss and Bailey Walters (Ridgecrest, Calif./Burroughs) are tied for first with 48 career wins.

All-Time Series
Today marked the 10th and 11th meetings between Holy Family and Bridgeport since the start of the 2005 season.  The Tigers are now 5-6 versus the Purple Knights in the series.
