Tigers Edged by Lions in CACC Doubleheader



Bensalem, Pa. - The Holy Family University softball team came up short in its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader versus Georgian Court University on Thursday afternoon at Bensalem High School. The Tigers were edged 9-7 in game one and came up short in game two, 8-3.

How It Happened (Game 1)

* Offense was plentiful in the opener as both teams combined for 16 runs and 22 hits. Leading 3-2 entering the third inning, the Lions scored three runs highlighted by a two-run single by Marissa Trezza. Georgian Court tacked on another three runs in the fourth inning with Samantha Reilly connecting on a two-run double in the inning.

* The Lions added another run in the fifth inning to grab their biggest lead of the game at 9-4 before the Tigers made things interesting in the bottom of the inning. Sophomore Tyler Beccari (Havertown, Pa./Haverford (Temple)) led the inning off with a single and junior Olivia Nolan (Shoreline, Wash./Shorecrest) followed with a two-run homer, her second of the game, to make the score 9-6. Senior Alyssa Cudeyro (Sicklerville, N.J./Washington Twp.) then double to left field and would later score on a single by senior Taylor Favinger (Deptford, N.J./Gloucester County Inst. of Tech.) to cut the lead to 9-7.

* Trezza came in to pitch for the Lions with one out and a runner on in the sixth inning and went on to hold the Tigers to a lone single in the seventh to secure the win.

How It Happened (Game 2)

* Georgian Court built a 6-0 lead before the Tigers scored their first run in the bottom of the fourth inning thanks to a sacrifice fly by freshman Heather Bogardus (Ridley, Pa./Ridley). Holy Family scored another run in the bottom of the fifth when Favinger crossed the plate on a wild pitch.

* Leading 6-2 in the seventh inning, the Lions scored a pair of runs off hits from Trezza and Lindsey Fischbach to make the score 8-2.

* Favinger would go on to score again for the Tigers in the bottom of the seventh off a throw error by the Lions.

Game Notes

* Nolan went 2-for-4 with a pair of home runs for the Tigers in game one. She hit a solo shot in the third and a two-run homer in the fifth. She now has three on the year and seven in her career. Nolan finished the doubleheader 3-for-7 with two runs and three RBI.

* Beccari, Cudeyro, and Favinger all went 2-for-4 at the plate in game one. Favinger finished with a double and two RBI, while Cudeyro's two hits were for extra bases.

* Sophomore Kelsey Marigliano (Seaford, N.Y./Plainledge) went 3-for-4 in game two as she finished the day with four hits (4-7) and a pair of walks. Junior Sam Klem (San Diego, Calif./Clairemont) also had multiple hits in game two going 2-for-3.

* Georgian Court's Reilly went a combined 3-for-8 with three runs and four RBI, including a two-run homer in game two. Caitlin Hughes totaled six hits on the day going 3-for-4 in game one and 3-for-3 in game number two. Hughes also scored four times between the two games and drove in two.

All-Time Series
Today marked the 40th and 41st meeting between Holy Family and Georgian Court since the start of the 2002 season. The sweep by the Lions halted the Tigers four-game winning streak in the series. Holy Family is now 13-28 against Georgian Court.

Holy Family returns to action on Friday as the Tigers travel to face Bloomfield College in another CACC doubleheader. Game one is set for 3 p.m.
