Tigers Clinch Postseason Berth With Win at GCU




Lakewood, N.J. - The Holy Family University women's basketball team will be heading back to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Tournament as the Tigers clinched the fourth seed in the South Division after defeating Georgian Court University, 77-59, on Wednesday night inside the Wellness Center.

How It Happened
 
* Holy Family used a big second half to overcome a seven-point (32-25) halftime deficit as the Tigers outscored the Lions, 52-27, in the final twenty minutes to record a double-digit victory.  Holy Family shot nearly 60-percent in the second half and knocked down 7-of-10 from deep range after not connecting on a single three-pointer in the first half (0-8). 
 
* Holy Family scored the first seven points in the second half to tie the game.  From there both teams exchanged leads nine times until the Tigers finally grabbed the lead after back-to-back three-pointers in the final minutes of the third quarter. A three by junior Katie O'Hare (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) tied the game at 48-48 before freshman Anjelai Hayes (Woodbury, N.J./Woodbury) knocked down a three to give the Tigers a three-point advantage (51-48) with :45 seconds remaining in the quarter.  After a basket by the Lions senior Alexis Hofstaedter (Richboro, Pa./Council Rock South (William & Mary)) drained a three as time expired as the Tigers led 54-50 entering the final quarter.
 
* In the fourth quarter the Tigers took full control of the game outscoring the Lions, 23-9.  Holy Family shot 9-of-16 from the field in the quarter and held GCU to just four field goals (4-12).
 
Inside the Box Score
Holy Family: All five starters scored in double-figures for the Tigers led by Hayes who scored a season-high 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting, including 3-of-6 from deep range… Sophomore Casey Schweitzer (Lagrangeville, N.Y./Arlington) finished with 15 points, five assists and five steals, while fellow sophomore Elizabeth Radley (Hainesport, N.J./Bishop Eustace Prep) added 13 points and five rebounds… Junior Casey Thomas (Hammonton, N.J./Cedar Creek) totaled 12 points and seven rebounds to go along with a career-high six steals on defense… Hofstaedter totaled 11 points, seven rebounds and a game-high seven assists.  
 
Georgian Court: Alba Herrero-Gomez led the Lions with 15 points while grabbing six rebounds… Jess Placher finished with 14 points, while Jaelyn Tweedy totaled nine points and nine rebounds.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the 30th meeting between Holy Family and Georgian Court since the Tigers joined Division II back in 2003-04.  The Tigers are now 29-1 versus the Lions in the series.
 
Postseason Picture
With the win the Tigers improved to 9-7 in conference play and with a loss by Goldey-Beacom College to the University of the Sciences this evening the Lightning (6-10) are now three games behind the Tigers with three to play.  Even though both teams could still finish tied by seasons end, Holy Family owns the tiebreak over the Lighting after sweeping the season series.  As a result the Tigers are locked in as the fourth seed in the South and will face the number one seed in the North Division to open up the CACC Tournament on Feb. 27.
 
Next Up
Holy Family returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 17 as the Tigers travel to face Concordia College in a CACC contest. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
