Tigers Shutout Rams to Open CACC Tournament

Lakewood, N.J. - The second seeded Holy Family University softball team opened the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Tournament on a winning note after defeating cross-town rival and seventh seeded Philadelphia University, 5-0, in the opening game on Thursday morning at the Georgian Court University Softball Field # 2.

Score: Holy Family 5, Philadelphia 0

Location: Lakewood, N.J. (GCU Softball Field #2)

How It Happened
Holy Family struck first with a run in the opening inning to jump out to a 1-0 lead.  In the first, junior Jen Trapp (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County) recorded an infield hit with the bases loaded to score freshman Alina Ponce De Leon (Menifee, Calif./Heritage) who led the inning off with a walk.

After plating just one run in the first, the Tigers had another bases loaded opportunity in the second inning.  Junior Koreen Orozco (Whittier, Calif./St. Paul) cleared the bases with one swing of the bat as she launched the ball over the left field fence to give the Tigers a commanding 5-0 advantage.  It marked Orozco's third home run of the season as she finished the game 2-for-3 with four RBI.

Senior Bailey Walters (Ridgecrest, Calif./Burroughs) (12-4) limited the Rams to three hits on the afternoon; all doubles.  Philadelphia though was unable to plate either runner as Walters forced 10 groundouts and struck out six batters on the way to her 12th victory of the season.

Setting the Mark
With the victory Walters tied former standout Jody Searfoss (2007-10) for most career victories in the program's Division II era with 48.  Walters next win will set a new Division II program record.  She is currently 48-24 in her career.

All-Time Series
Today marked the 34th meeting all-time between Holy Family and Philadelphia since the start of the 2002 season.  The Tigers improve to 21-13 versus their cross-town rivals, including 2-0 in the CACC Tournament.
