Tigers Drop CACC Doubleheader at Nationally Ranked Caldwell

Caldwell, N.J. - The Holy Family University softball team dropped a pair of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contests in a doubleheader at nationally ranked No. 25 Caldwell University on Sunday afternoon at the CU Softball Field.  The Tigers were edged, 2-1, in the opener and then came up short 6-4 in game two as the Cougars completed the sweep.

GM1 Score: Caldwell 2, Holy Family 1
GM2 Score: Caldwell 6, Holy Family 4
Records: Holy Family (13-13, 7-5 CACC) | Caldwell (22-9, 14-0 CACC)
Location: Caldwell, N.J. (CU Softball Field)

Game One: Caldwell 2, Holy Family 1
Caldwell jumped out front first in the opener thanks to a run scoring single by Marisa Monasseri that gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead after one inning.  The lead would be short lived as the Tigers responded in the second when sophomore Olivia Nolan (Shoreline, Wash./Shorecrest) blasted her third home run of the season over the left field fence to tie the game at 1-1.

The score remained tied until the fifth inning when Caldwell regained the lead with a solo run in the inning.  Lauren Frye led the inning off with a triple and three batters later scored on a single by Carly Testa as the Cougars grabbed a 2-1 lead.

Still trailing 2-1 entering the seventh the Tigers made things interesting.  After two quick outs to start the inning, junior Alyssa Cudeyro (Sicklerville, N.J./Washington Twp.) entered as a pinch hitter and doubled to center field.  Freshman Kelsey Marigliano (Seaford, N.Y./Plainledge) then drew a walk before the Tigers loaded the bases after a fielding error led to junior Taylor Favinger (Deptford, N.J./Gloucester County Inst. of Tech.) reaching base.

Despite facing a bases loaded situation with the game on the line, Caldwell pitcher Sydney Ponto managed to retire the final Tigers' batter in the inning to pick up her 14th victory of the season.  Ponto went the distance as she allowed just one run on six hits while striking out six.

Senior Bailey Walters (Ridgecrest, Calif./Burroughs) (3-3) received the hard-luck loss as she went six innings for the Tigers.  Walters allowed just two runs on five hits and struck out five.

Game Two: Caldwell 6, Holy Family 4
In the second game both teams opened the first inning with a run capitalizing off fielding errors by the defense.  Holy Family grabbed the lead in the top of the second with another run thanks to a run scoring double by freshman Rachael Zeides (Woodbine, N.J./Ocean City).

However, Caldwell answered right back in the second with a pair of runs.  Frye highlighted the inning with a RBI triple and would later score on a hit by Melissa Rini.  The Cougars added another run in the third to take a 4-2 lead.

The Tigers cut the lead down to one in the top half of the fourth with a run scoring single by Marigliano, but the Cougars tacked one runs in the fifth and sixth to lead 6-3 heading into the final frame.

Holy Family managed to plate a run in the seventh but that was all the offense the Tigers could muster as Caldwell squeaked out the victory for the sweep.

Jessie Johnston (5-4) received the win after going 5.1 innings.  She allowed three runs (2 earned) on eight hits.  Ponto (S, 2) entered picked up the save after entering midway through the sixth inning.  She surrendered one run on two hits in 1.2 innings of work.

Junior Koreen Orozco (Whittier, Calif./St. Paul) (9-6) was the pitcher of record for the Tigers as she went 4.1 innings. Orozco allowed five runs (4 earned) on nine hits.  Walters came in the game in relief in the bottom of the fifth going 1.2 innings.

Cudeyro, Marigliano and Orozco all went 2-for-4 at the plate for the Tigers.

Today marked the 34th and 35th meetings all-time between Holy Family and Caldwell dating back to the 2002 season.  Caldwell improves to 29-6 in the series ending the Tigers two-game winning streak in the series.
