Tigers Split CACC Doubleheader at Dominican

Orangeburg, N.Y. - The Holy Family University softball team split a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader at Dominican College after winning the nightcap, 7-4, on Saturday afternoon.  The Tigers dropped the first game, 9-8.

GM1 Score: Dominican 9, Holy Family 8
GM2 Score: Holy Family 7, Dominican 4
Records: Holy Family (13-11, 7-3 CACC) | Dominican (13-12, 5-3 CACC)
Location: Orangeburg, N.Y. (Southe Orangetown LL)

Game One: Dominican 9, Holy Family 8
A four-run seventh inning flipped the script of the game as Dominican rallied from three runs down in the final frame to defeat Holy Family.  The Chargers started the inning with back-to-back singles before the Tigers recorded an out.  A walk to Ariana Trembone loaded the bases which was followed by a two-run double by Jillian Regen to make the score 8-7.

The Chargers tied the game with a groundout by Shannon Truppi that scored the tying run.  Alexandra Pannuto then delivered a base hit to left field to score Regan for the walk-off game-winning run.

Holy Family took advantage of Dominican miscues in the field capitalizing on four Chargers' errors.  The Tigers led 5-1 after the third inning.  A grand slam by Samantha Fitzgerald in the fourth tied the game before Holy Family responded with a pair of runs in the fifth.

Junior Koreen Orozco (Whittier, Calif./St. Paul) and sophomore Olivia Nolan (Shoreline, Wash./Shorecrest) led the inning off with back-to-back doubles and would later score on a two-out single by freshman Alina Ponce de Leon.  The Tigers added another run in the sixth inning after junior Taylor Favinger (Deptford, N.J./Gloucester County Inst. of Tech.) led the inning off with a triple.  Senior Bailey Walters (Ridgecrest, Calif./Burroughs) dropped down a sacrifice bunt to score Favinger as Holy Family increased its lead to 8-5.

Ponce de Leon went 3-for-5 in the game with three RBI to lead the Tigers.  Orozco also had three hits as she finished 3-for-4 with two runs.

Game Two: Holy Family 7, Dominican 4
Holy Family wasted no time pouncing on the Chargers by scoring five runs in the second inning.  Orozco got things going as she reached base on a passed ball after striking out to lead the inning off.  The heads up play allowed the Tigers to load the bases leading to the game's first run.

Ponce de Leon drew a bases loaded walk and then freshman Kelsey Marigliano (Seaford, N.Y./Plainledge) came through with a two-run single.  Favinger drove in Ponce de Leon on a sacrifice fly to before junior Alyssa Cudeyro (Sicklerville, N.J./Washington Twp.) capped the scoring with a single to score Marigliano.

Dominican got two runs back in the bottom of the inning with run scoring hits by Alexandria Ledgerwood and Mary Curatolo to make the score 5-2.

Holy Family added a pair of runs in the top half of the fifth to pad the score.  The Tigers received RBI singles from sophomore Olivia Nolan (Shoreline, Wash./Shorecrest) and freshman Rachael Zeides (Woodbine, N.J./Ocean City).  Senior Briana Scotto led the inning off with a single to jump-start the offensive surge.  Junior Jenn Trapp also had a hit in the inning and scored.

The two runs by the Tigers made the score 7-2 and gave Orozco (9-5) plenty of support as she picked up her ninth victory of the season.  Orozco allowed four runs (3 earned) on ten hits while striking out two batters.

The Chargers added a single run in both the fifth and seventh innings.

Zeides led the Tigers going 3-for-3 at the plate, while Cudeyro, Scotto and Trapp each recorded a pair of hits.

All-Time Series
Today marked the 34th and 35th meetings all-time between Holy Family and Dominican since the 2002 season.  The game two victory marked the first win over the Chargers since the 2014 season.  The Tigers are 12-23 against Dominican in the series.
