Philadelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University softball team suffered its first loss of the season in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action as the Tigers dropped a conference doubleheader at Chestnut Hill College on Wednesday afternoon. The Tigers lost the first game, 2-1, and then came up short in an 8-7 decision in the nightcap.

GM1 Score: Chestnut Hill 2, Holy Family 1
GM2 Score: Chestnut Hill 8, Holy Family 7
Records: Holy Family (12-10, 6-2 CACC) | Chestnut Hill (6-16, 4-4 CACC)
Location: Philadelphia, Pa. (CHC Softball Field)

Game One: Chestnut Hill 2, Holy Family 1
Both teams scored in the opening inning via the long ball.  Junior Taylor Favinger (Deptford, N.J./Gloucester County Inst. of Tech.) drilled a two-out solo home run in the top of the first to give the Tigers a 1-0 advantage.  It marked her third homer of the season.

The Tigers' lead didn't last long as Chestnut Hill answered right back in the bottom of the inning.  Sophomore Ariel Magee led the inning off with a solo home run to tie the game.

The Holy Family defense stepped up in the third when the first three Griffins reached base.  Holy Family junior pitcher Koreen Orozco (Whittier, Calif./St. Paul) forced Chestnut Hill's Jessica Pulis to line into a double play before retiring Ashleigh Sharp on a fly ball to get out of the inning.

The score remained deadlocked until the bottom of the seventh inning.  Senior Jenna Long led the inning off with a triple to right field.  Freshman Cailey Stevenson entered as a pinch runner and would score on a foul out to first base to give the Griffins the 2-1 victory.

Orozco (8-5) went 6.1 innings as she allowed two runs on five hits.  She finished the game with a season-high five strikeouts.  Her counterpart, Briannen Holloway, (4-7) went the distance for the Griffins to earn the victory.  Holloway surrendered one run on two hits while striking out six.

Game Two: Chestnut Hill 8, Holy Family 7
It was a high scoring affair in the nightcap as both teams combined for 15 runs and 24 hits.  Chestnut Hill opened the scoring with a run in the first inning but Holy Family responded in the second inning with three runs to grab the lead.

Four straight hits in the second led to a pair of runs for the Tigers.  Sophomore Olivian Nolan drove in junior Jennifer Trapp with a single and then scored on a double by freshman Rachael Zeides (Woodbine, N.J./Ocean City).  Later in the inning Zeides scored on a ground ball to cap the scoring.

In the fourth the Tigers added three more runs thanks to a three-run home run by senior Bailey Walters (Ridgecrest, Calif./Burroughs) as she connected on her first home of the season.

The Tigers held a comfortable 6-1 lead entering the bottom of the fourth but Chestnut Hill rallied with four runs to come within one run of the lead.  Sophomore Lily Winn highlighted the inning with a three-run double.

Holy Family got one of the runs back in the top half of the fifth to increase its lead to 7-5.  However, the Griffins once again rallied.  This time Chestnut Hill grabbed the lead for the first time in the game with a three-run sixth inning.  Long recorded a run scoring double before Magee hit a two-run home run for her second long ball of the afternoon.

The Tigers nearly tied the game in their final at-bat as Holy Family loaded the bases with two outs, but Holloway (S, 1) was able to close out the game to earn the save for the Griffins.

Walters (3-1) suffered her first defeat of the season allowing eight runs in five innings of work.  She struck out a season-high six batters.

Favinger went an impressive 4-for-4 in the game and finished the double header with five hits.  Freshman Alina Ponce de Leon went 3-for-5, while Nolan went 3-for-4.
