Tigers Split With Eagles; Secure 2nd Seed in CACC Tournament

Waterbury, Conn. - The Holy Family University softball team capped the regular season with a split at Post University in the final Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader of the season on Saturday afternoon at LaMoy Field.  The Tigers won game one, 8-5, but were shutout in the second game, 5-0.

GM1: Holy Family 8, Post 5
GM2: Post 5, Holy Family 0
Records: Holy Family (26-18, 19-7 CACC) | Post (18-25, 12-14 CACC)
Location: Waterbury, Conn. (LaMoy Field)

Game One: Holy Family 8, Post 5
Holy Family jumped out to a quick lead in the opener.  Junior Taylor Favinger (Deptford, N.J./Gloucester County Inst. of Tech.) highlighted the first inning with a two-run double to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.  Post got one of the runs back in the bottom of the inning when Kate Dawson drew a bases-loaded walk to force in a run.  The Tigers managed to escape the inning without any further damage.

Holy Family responded in the second inning as the Tigers plated four runners to take a commanding 6-1 lead.  The Tigers took advantage of two fielding errors by the Eagles to keep the inning alive.  Freshmen Rachael Zeides (Woodbine, N.J./Ocean City) and Kelsey Marigliano (Seaford, N.Y./Plainledge) along with Favinger all had run scoring hits in the inning.

The Tigers added two more runs in the third inning via the long ball.  Junior Alyssa Cudeyro (Sicklerville, N.J./Washington Twp.) launched her first home run of the season as she led the inning off with a solo shot over the left field fence.  Later in the inning freshman Alina Ponce De Leon (Menifee, Calif./Heritage) homered to left field as well for her fourth home run of the season.

Post scored a run in the fourth inning and then came away with three runs in the fifth inning to make things interesting down the stretch.  Jessica Grzywna recorded a two-run single in the inning for the Eagles.

Despite the potential comeback by Post, the Tigers managed to close out the game and secure the three run victory.  Senior Bailey Walters (Ridgecrest, Calif./Burroughs) (11-4) was credited with the victory as she picked up her 11th win of the season.

Favinger led the Holy Family offense with a perfect 3-for-3 performance at the plate to go along with three RBI.  Cudeyro also tallied three hits going 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.

Game Two: Post 5, Holy Family 0
In the nightcap the Eagles went on to shut down the Holy Family offense.  Starting pitcher, Leslie Denis, limited the Tigers to just six hits over seven innings of work.  Denis (8-10) struck out four batters on her way to her eighth victory of the season.

The Eagles opened the game with a run in both the first and second innings.  They added another in the fifth and went on to plate two in the sixth thanks to a two-run single by Kayla Kresley who finished the game 2-for-2 with a pair of walks.  Dawson went 2-for-3, while Skylar Devorin finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs.

Ponce De Leon went 2-for-4 as the only Tigers player with multiple hits.  Junior Olivia Nolan (Shoreline, Wash./Shorecrest) (1-3) tallied the team's lone extra-base hit with a double in the seventh.

All-Time Series
Today's doubleheader marked the 36th and 37th meetings all-time between Holy Family and Post since the start of the 2002 season.  Holy Family has won five of the last six games in the series and is 24-13 versus the Eagles.

Postseason Picture
Holy Family official secured the second seed in the upcoming CACC Tournament.  The Tigers finished conference play with a 19-7 record and despite third-place Dominican College boasting a 17-7 conference mark with one doubleheader to play, Holy Family still clinches the second seed even with a chance of the Chargers tying for second.  With Wilmington University (17-9) currently sitting in fourth the tiebreak scenario, if presented, would be both Holy Family (2-0) and Dominican's (1-1) record versus the Wildcats in the regular season to break the tie.

Back-to-Back
Holy Family tied the program's NCAA Era record for most conference victories as the Tigers finished the season 19-7 in CACC action for the second consecutive season.

Next Up
Holy Family returns to action on Thursday, May 4 as the Tigers start day one of the CACC Tournament hosted by Georgian Court University in Lakewood, N.J.  Holy Family's opponent is still yet to be determined.  With the potential of a five-way tie for seventh and eighth place in the standings, pairings for the tournament may not be available until late Monday.
