Tigers Sweep Lightning in CACC Doubleheader

Wilmington, Del. - The Holy Family University softball team reached the 20th win mark for the fifth time in six years after completing a sweep at Goldey-Beacom College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader on Thursday afternoon at the Jackson Complex.  Holy Family won game one, 3-0, before capping the day with an 8-3 victory in game two.

Game One: Holy Family 3, Goldey-Beacom 0
Back-to-back triples in the top half of the third inning was all the offense Holy Family would need as the Tigers recorded their second shutout victory of the season.  Junior Olivia Nolan (Shoreline, Wash./Shorecrest) led the third off with a single, but the Lightning retired the next two batters and was one out away from getting out of the inning.  However, freshman Kelsey Marigliano (Seaford, N.Y./Plainledge) drilled a triple to center field to drive in Nolan.  Junior Taylor Favinger (Deptford, N.J./Gloucester County Inst. of Tech.) followed with a triple of her own to score Marigliano as the Tigers took a 2-0 lead.

The two runs were plenty for senior Bailey Walters (Ridgecrest, Calif./Burroughs) (8-4) as she limited the Lightning to three hits over seven innings.  Walters earned her eighth victory of the season and finished the game with three strikeouts while issuing three walks.

Holy Family tacked on another run in the top of the sixth inning when junior Koreen Orozco (Whittier, Calif./St. Paul) delivered a double to left-center scoring Favinger to give the Tigers a 3-0 advantage.  Favinger finished the game 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.  Junior Jen Trapp (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County) recorded a hit in the second inning to tally her 100th career hit.

In the later game, a six run seventh inning turned out to be the difference.  The Tigers entered the final frame trailing 3-2 but when the inning was all said and done found themselves with a five-run advantage. Nolan led the inning off with a double before junior Alyssa Cudeyro (Sicklerville, N.J./Washington Twp.) reached base after getting hit by a pitch.  Two batters later, Marigliano drew a walk to load the bases.

With one out in the inning, Favinger and Orozco recorded back-to-back two-run singles to give the Tigers a 6-3 lead.  Freshman Rachael Zeides (Woodbine, N.J./Ocean City) drove in a pair of runs later in the inning with a two-out single.

Orozco (12-9) then retired the Lightning in order in the bottom of the inning to pick up her 12th victory of the season.  She finished the game allowing only two earned runs on six hits while striking out five.

Orozco drove in the first two runs of the game with a run scoring single in the first and a solo homer in the third for her second home run of the season.  She finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBI and two runs.

For Goldey-Beacom, Lauren Conway went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

100th Career Hit Milestone
With a two-out single in the second inning of game one, Trapp recorded the 100th hit of her career.  She became the third player this season to reach the milestone joining Favinger and Orozco who reached the feat earlier in the season.

All-Time Series
Today marked the 33rd and 34th meetings all-time between Holy Family and Goldey-Beacom since the start of the 2002 season.  Holy Family improves to 26-8 in the series after winning its 11th straight game versus the Lightning.

Postseason Picture
Holy Family is currently third in the CACC standings and could clinch a postseason berth into the conference tournament this weekend.  The Tigers have three conference doubleheaders remaining on their schedule and are in position to finish as high as second in the standings.

Next Up
Holy Family returns to action on Saturday, April 22 as the Tigers host Felician University in a CACC doubleheader. Game one is set for 12 p.m. at the Bensalem High School Softball Field.  In between games the Tigers will recognize seniors Brianna Scotto (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) and Bailey Walters (Ridgecrest, Calif./Burroughs) in part of the team's Senior Day festivities.
