Tigers and Bears Split CACC Doubleheader

Bensalem, Pa. - The Holy Family University softball team split a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader with the Bloomfield College Bears on Tuesday afternoon at the Bensalem High School Softball Field.  The Tigers won the opener, 9-1, but were edged by the Bears in the second game by the score of 1-0.

Location: Bensalem, Pa. (Bensalem High School)

Game One: Holy Family 9, Bloomfield 1
Holy Family struck first in the opener jumping out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning.  Freshmen Alina Ponce de Leon and Kelsey Marigliano (Seaford, N.Y./Plainledge) started the inning with back-to-back singles before junior Taylor Favinger (Deptford, N.J./Gloucester County Inst. of Tech.) reached on an error by the Bloomfield third baseman to load the bases.

Two batters later, senior Brianna Scotto (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) was hit by a pitch and then junior Jen Trapp (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County) drew a walk to score the game's first two runs.

Bloomfield got one of the runs back in the top half of the third when Paige Lafferty drove in Delanie Cruz with a base hit to center field.  However, the responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to pull away from the Bears.  Sophomore Samantha Klem (San Diego, Calif./Clairemont) highlighted the inning with a two-run double and then sophomore Olivia Nolan (Shoreline, Wash./Shorecrest) came through with a run scoring hit to right field to give the Tigers a 5-1 lead.

The Tigers' offense wasn't quite done as the home team added four more runs in the fourth inning.  Three straight singles to start the inning jump-started the rally as four different batters drove in runs in the inning.

Holding on to a 9-1 lead entering the fifth inning, starting pitcher Bailey Walters (Ridgecrest, Calif./Burroughs) retired the Bears to close out the five-inning complete game.  Walters (7-4) picked up her seventh win of the season as she held the Bears to one run on two hits while striking out three.

Ponce de Leon, Marigliano and Favinger all went 2-for-3 in the game with two runs apiece.  Scotto finished 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBI, while Klem led the team with three RBI after going 1-for-2 at the plate with a sacrifice fly.

Game Two: Bloomfield 1, Holy Family 0
Runs were hard to come by in the nightcap despite both teams combining for 16 hits.  Bloomfield scored the game's lone run in the opening inning after the Bears took advantage of a Holy Family fielding miscue.

Kiersten Coho (5-4) held the Tigers to just six hits in seven innings of work as she recorded her fifth win of the season.  Coho also struck out five batters and did not issue a single walk.

Junior Koreen Orozco (Whittier, Calif./St. Paul) (11-9) was slotted with the hard-luck loss despite holding the Bears to just one unearned run in a complete game effort.  Orozco allowed 10 hits but did not walk a batter and finished with a pair of strikeouts.

Bloomfield's Lafferty went 2-for-4 in the game as she accounted for three of the Bears' 11 hits on the afternoon.

100 Hits Milestone
Trapp is now one hit away from reaching 100 hits in her career.  With her next hit she'll be the third member of the team to reach the milestone this season joining Favinger and Orozco to already reach such feat.

All-Time Series
Today marked the 35th and 36th meetings all-time between Holy Family and Bloomfield since the start of the 2002 season.  The Tigers are now 22-14 versus the Bears in that span and had won four straight before Bloomfield's game two victory.

Next Up
Holy Family is back in action on Thursday, April 20 as the Tigers travel to face Goldey-Beacom College in a CACC doubleheader.  Game one is set for 2:30 p.m.
