Tigers Sweep Wildcats in CACC Doubleheader

Bensalem, Pa. - The Holy Family University softball team got some revenge over Wilmington University in a rematch of last year's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) title game as the Tigers came away with a doubleheader sweep of the Wildcats on Wednesday afternoon at the Bensalem High School Softball Field.  The Tigers took the first game, 5-3, and went on to win game two, 6-3.

Location: Bensalem, Pa. (Bensalem High School Softball Field)

Game One: Holy Family 5, Wilmington 3
Holy Family wasted no time jumping on top of Wilmington by scoring a pair of runs in the first inning.  Freshman Alina Ponce de Leon led the inning off with a triple down the right field line and would score on a double by junior Taylor Favinger (Deptford, N.J./Gloucester County Inst. of Tech.).

Redshirt junior Amanda Paredes (Moorpark, Calif./Thousand Oaks) followed with a single to left field to plate Favinger as the Tigers took a 2-0 lead.

The Tigers doubled their lead in the third inning with another pair of runs.  Juniors Brianna Scotto (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) and Koreen Orozco (Whittier, Calif./St. Paul) recorded back-to-back run scoring hits to make the score 4-0.  Scotto had another RBI single in the fifth inning that counter the Wildcats run from the top of the inning.

The five runs seemed to be plenty for senior Bailey Walters (Ridgecrest, Calif./Burroughs) (3-0) as she went the distance to pick up her third win of the season.  She finished the game with five strikeouts and allowed three runs on six hits.

Wilmington made things interesting in the top half of the seventh when senior Becca Stanley led the inning off with a solo home run.

The Wildcats loaded the bases after Stanley's homer but only plated one additional run on a sacrifice fly by freshman Rosa'Lynn Burton.  Walters forced senior Meghan Brown to ground out for the final out of the game as the Tigers held on to the 5-3 victory.

The Tigers finished the game with 10 hits as Ponce de Leon (2-4), Favinger (2-3), Paredes (2-3) and Scotto (2-3) each recorded two hits apiece.

Wilmington sophomore Jazmeen Llamas went 3-for-3 with a walk to lead the Wildcats.

Game Two: Holy Family 6, Wilmington 3
Just like the opener, the Tigers jumped out early on the Wildcats in the nightcap.  Freshman Rachael Zeides (Woodbine, N.J./Ocean City) came through with a two-out run scoring single to give the Tigers their first run of the game in the second inning.  Scotto, who led the inning off with a single to left field, scored on the play.

Holy Family added another run in the third inning thanks to a RBI single to center field by Paredes that scored Ponce de Leon.  The team doubled their lead in the fourth when sophomore Olivia Nolan (Shoreline, Wash./Shorecrest) drilled a shot over the left field fence for her second home run of the season.  Zeides scored on Nolan's long ball after doubling to right field prior to her at-bat.

Wilmington got on the board in the fifth when senior Kaitlyn Slater hit a solo home run to left-center field. Orozco (8-4) retired the Wildcats in order following Slater's home run to keep the Tigers ahead, 4-1.

Holy Family got the run back in the bottom of the inning when Paredes scored Favinger on a groundball to second base.  Favinger tripled to right-center prior to set up the run scoring play. The Tigers tacked on another run in the sixth to increase their lead to 6-1 entering the final frame.

The Wildcats, just like in opener, got to the Holy Family starter in the final inning.  Wilmington scored a pair of runs highlighted by a two-run single by Llamas.  However, Orozco managed to hold off the Wildcats rally and close out the game for her team-leading eighth victory of the season.

Orozco was charged for three runs (1 earned) in seven innings of work in the winning effort.

Zeides finished the game 2-for-2 for the Tigers, while Orozco also came through with a pair of hits (2-2).

All-Time Series
Today marked the 40th and 41st meetings all-time between Holy Family and Wilmington since the start of the 2002 season.  The Tigers are now 24-17 with the two wins, snapping a four-game losing streak against the Wildcats.
