Tigers Tame Huskies With Doubleheader Sweep

Bensalem, Pa. - The Holy Family University softball team picked up its second doubleheader sweep in as many days as the Tigers edged out Bloomsburg University in a pair of non-conference contests on Sunday afternoon at the Bensalem High School Softball Field.  Holy Family took the first game in nine innings, 4-3, before closing out the doubleheader with a 5-4 victory in game two.

Game One: Holy Family 4, Bloomsburg 3 (9 Innings)
Seven innings wasn't enough in the opener as the Tigers and Huskies battled in extra innings with Holy Family coming up on the winning end when it was all said and done.  With the international tiebreaker in effect in the ninth inning, freshman Rachael Zeides (Woodbine, N.J./Ocean City) was placed on second base to start the inning.

Sophomore Olivia Nolan (Shoreline, Wash./Shorecrest) attempted to sacrifice Zeides over to third to open the inning and did just that as her bunt pushed past the three charging Bloomsburg fielders.  Nolan reached base on the bunt single, while Zeides made her way over to third with ease.  Bloomsburg intentionally walked freshman Alina Ponce de Leon to load the bases and force a possible out at either base moving forward.  Junior Taylor Favinger (Deptford, N.J./Gloucester County Inst. of Tech.) had other ideas as she stepped in and delivered a base hit to drive in Zeides for the game-winning run.

Holy Family scored its previous three runs all in the fourth inning.  Junior Jen Trapp (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County) highlighted the inning with a two-run double down the left field line. She later scored on a base hit by Nolan to give the Tigers at 3-1 lead at that point.

Junior Koreen Orozco (Whittier, Calif./St. Paul) (7-4) went the full nine innings for the Tigers to pick up the win.  She allowed just three runs, two of which were earned, on nine hits.

Favinger went 3-for-5 in the game for the Tigers, while Ponce de Leon went a perfect 3-for-3 with two walks.

For Bloomsburg, Kelsey Impink (2-4), Julia Knight (2-5) and Emily Mayhew (2-5) all record multiple hits.

Game Two: Holy Family 5, Bloomsburg 4
The nightcap was just as thrilling as the opener as one run separated the two teams when the final out was recorded.  Both teams exchanged runs in the first inning with Bloomsburg's Taylor Parker connecting on a two-out home run to jump-start the scoring.

Holy Family responded with a run of its own in the bottom of the inning thanks to the speed and power of Favinger.  She launched a ball to right field that hit off the fence to give her ample time to secure a triple but Favinger never stopped at third and continued towards home plate. She beat the throw and tag at the plate for the inside the park home run and as a result tied the game at 1-1.

Favinger came through with another clutch two-out hit in the third inning to give the Tigers their first lead of the game.  This time she tripled to left field to score junior Tori Hernandez (Benton, Ark./Bryant) who entered the game as a pinch runner for senior Bailey Walters (Ridgecrest, Calif./Burroughs)

The Holy Family lead disappeared in the fifth inning when Bloomsburg plated three runs to take a 4-2 lead.  The Tigers once again countered the Huskies and responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead. Ponce de Leon recorded a run scoring single in the inning and later scored on a wild pitch.  Senior Brianna Scotto (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly.

Walters (2-0) earned the win after going the distance in her first complete game of the season. She struck out five batters in seven innings while allowing four runs on five hits.

All-Time Series
The doubleheader sweep marked the Tigers first victories over the Huskies in the all-time series.  The two teams met 14 times previously dating back to the 2004 season.  Bloomsburg won all 14 games before Holy Family's two wins this afternoon.

Next Up
Holy Family will resume Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play on Wednesday, March 29 as the Tigers host Wilmington University in a CACC doubleheader.  Game one is set for 2 p.m. at the Bensalem High School Softball Field.
