Tigers Fall to City Rival Devils in CACC Opener



Philadelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University women's basketball team dropped its first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest of the season by the score of 57-45 versus national ranked No. 20 University of the Sciences on Saturday afternoon inside the Campus Center Gymnasium.

How It Happened
 
* A late run spanning late in the third quarter and early in the fourth turned out to be the difference in a back-and-forth game early on.  Leading 37-35 with less than two minutes to play in the third quarter, USciences went on to score six of the final seven points of the quarter to carry a 43-36 lead into the final quarter.  The Devils went on to score the first nine points of the fourth quarter to grab their largest lead of the game after Sarah Abbonizio converted a pair of free throws to make the score 52-36 with 5:58 remaining.
 
* USciences held on to its double-digit lead the rest of the fourth quarter as the Devils outscored the Tigers, 14-9, in the final 10 minutes. 
 
* Holy Family led 10-9 after the first quarter as the game held the course of a typical Holy Family/USciences match up of low scoring and tough defense.  Both teams shot nearly identical from the field with the Tigers holding a slight edge of 36.2-percent to the Devils 35.7-percent shooting.  The difference in the game was the three-point shooting with the Devils connecting on 11 threes to only five by the Tigers.
 
Inside the Box Score
Holy Family: Junior Casey Thomas (Hammonton, N.J./Cedar Creek) led the team in scoring the third straight game as she finished with a game-high 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field… Thomas knocked down her first five shots of the game; all coming in the first half… She also totaled a team-high eight rebounds… Freshman Anjelai Hayes (Woodbury, N.J./Woodbury) scored a season-high 10 points to go along with five rebounds… Senior Alexis Hofstaedter (Richboro, Pa./Council Rock South (William & Mary)) finished with seven points and a game-high seven assists… Sophomore Casey Schweitzer (Lagrangeville, N.Y./Arlington) added five point and six rebounds, while sophomore Dana Dockery (Wappinger Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) contributed six points and three rebounds.
 
USciences: Alex Thomas and Irisa Ye each scored 13 points apiece to lead the Devils… Ye came off the bench and shot 4-of-5 from the field, including a perfect 3-of-3 from deep range… Abbonizio also scored in double-figures with 12 points to go along with a team-high four assists.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 43rd meeting between Holy Family and USciences since the start of the 1996-97 season.  The Tigers are now 34-9 versus their city rival with the Devils winning the last three match ups.
 
CACC Hall of Fame
Prior to today's game the CACC in conjunction with Holy Family officially inducted the 2007-08 women's basketball in the CACC Hall of Fame as members of the Class of 2017-18.  Members of the 2007-08 squad were on hand for a special pregame celebration.
 
Next Up
Holy Family returns to action on Tuesday, Dec. 5 as the Tigers travel to face Wilmington University in a CACC contest. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
