Walters Tosses One-Hitter as Tigers Shutout Post

Lakewood, N.J. - Junior Bailey Walters (Ridgecrest, Calif./Burroughs) tossed a complete-game one-hitter as the Holy Family University softball team opened the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Tournament with a 2-0 victory over fifth-seeded Post University on Thursday afternoon at the Georgian Court University Softball Field.

Score: Holy Family 2, Post 0
Records: Holy Family (28-15) | Post (25-22)
Location: Lakewood, N.J. (Softball Field #2)

Walters (14-7) retired 17 straight batters to close out the game after allowing a one-out single in the second inning.  She struck out three batters and didn't issue a single walk on her way to her 14th victory of the season.

Holy Family broke a 0-0 deadlock in the bottom half of the fourth with a pair of runs to give Walters more than enough run support.  Sophomores Jenna Vasquez (Newark, Del./Caravel Academy) and Taylor Favinger (Deptford, N.J./Gloucester County Inst. of Tech.) led the inning off with back-to-back singles.  Both runners advanced into scoring position when freshman Samantha Klem (San Diego, Calif./Clairemont) dropped down a sacrifice bunt.

Senior Alexis Maggi (Stratford, N.J./Sterling) then came through with a single to right field scoring Vasquez to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.  Favinger was cut down at the plate as she attempted to score on the play.

The Tigers would double their lead after a Post error led to another run in the inning.

Senior Samantha Esque (19-8), who was just named the CACC Pitcher of the Year for the second straight season, received the loss despite the complete-game effort.  Esque allowed two runs (1 earned) in six innings while striking out three batters.

Maggi led the Tigers with a pair of hits in the game going 2-for-3 at the plate.
