Tigers Split With Nationally Ranked No. 24 Caldwell

Bensalem, Pa. - The Holy Family University softball team split a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader with nationally ranked No. 24 Caldwell University on Saturday afternoon at the Bensalem High School Softball Field.  Caldwell won the first game by the score of 10-1, while Holy Family took game two, 8-2.

GM1 Score: Caldwell 10, Holy Family 1 (5)
GM2 Score: Holy Family 8, Caldwell 2
Records: Holy Family (11-14, 5-6 CACC) | Caldwell (14-10, 9-3 CACC)
Location: Bensalem, Pa. (Bensalem High School Softball Field)

Game 1: Caldwell 10, Holy Family 1 (5)
Senior Megan Fryday gave Caldwell and starting pitcher, senior Amber Padilla, an early 2-0 lead after delivering a two-run homer over the right-center field fence.  Fryday's second inning bomb was plenty of support for Padilla who held the Tigers hitless through the first 3.2 innings.

Padilla (8-2) went 4.1 innings where she allowed just one run on two hits, while striking out two batters.

Caldwell added four runs each in the fourth and fifth innings.  The Cougars tallied 10 hits in the game with six being for extra bases.  Caldwell recorded five doubles and one home run.

Holy Family scored its lone run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Sophomore Taylor Favinger (Deptford, N.J./Gloucester County Inst. of Tech.) dropped down a two-out bunt for the team's first hit.  Two batters later, senior Alexis Maggi (Stratford, N.J./Sterling) singled to center field to drive in Favinger.

Game 2: Holy Family 8, Caldwell 2
Caldwell struck for two runs in the first inning and seemed to be control until the Tigers responded with a pair of runs in the second to shift the momentum.

Senior Alexis Maggi (Stratford, N.J./Sterling) gave the Tigers a boost with a solo home run to dead center field to cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom half of the second.  Two batters later, sophomore Koreen Orozco (Whittier, Calif./St. Paul) drew a walk and would score after sophomore Jennifer Trapp (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County) doubled to left-center field.

Holy Family grabbed its first lead of the doubleheader in the following inning when senior Kristine Casey (Newark, Del./Caravel) drew a walk with the bases loaded.

In the fourth, the Tigers struck big off the bat of Favinger.  With the bases loaded she launched a shot over the right-center field fence as Holy Family increased its lead to 7-2.

The Tigers tacked on one more run in the fifth off a sacrifice fly from junior Brianna Scotto (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon).

Orozco (5-7), who pitched both games for the Tigers, held Caldwell to three hits the final six innings of the game after surrendering two runs in the opening frame.  In fact, Orozco only had four base runners in play the final 18 outs.

All-Time Series
Today marked the 28th and 29th meeting all-time between Holy Family and Caldwell in the program's Division II era beginning with the 2004 season.  The Tigers entered the doubleheader losing 12 straight to the Cougars, including the 10-1 loss in game one.  Holy Family's victory ended the skid and was just the third victory versus the Cougars since joining NCAA Division II.  The Tigers last win against Caldwell was a 5-3 victory in the second game of a doubleheader on April 5, 2010.

Next Up
Holy Family will travel to face Philadelphia University in a solo game tomorrow in a make up of the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader.  Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
