Tigers Sweep Molloy on Senior Day

Bensalem, Pa. - The Holy Family University softball team completed its second sweep in as many days as the Tigers defeated Molloy College, 2-1 and 7-1, in a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Bensalem High School on Senior Day.  In-between games the Tigers recognized their four seniors with an on-field ceremony in part of the team's Senior Day Festivities.  This year's class includes, Alicia Alvarado (Palmdale, Calif./Paraclete), Claudia Boggi (West Chester, Pa./Bishop Shanahan), Kristine Casey (Newark, Del./Caravel) and Alexis Maggi (Stratford, N.J./Sterling).

Game 1: Holy Family 2, Molloy 1
In the opener, two swings of the bat were the difference in the game.  Junior Brianna Scotto (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) led the bottom of the first inning off with a home run over the left field fence to give the Tigers an early 1-0 lead.  It marked Scotto's third home run of the season.

Three batters later, freshman Samantha Klem (San Diego, Calif./Clairemont) followed Scotto's lead and hit a home run of her own to left field to increase the Tigers' lead to 2-0.  Klem's solo shot marked her team leading sixth home run of the season.

That would be all the run support junior Koreen Orozco (Whittier, Calif./St. Paul) (10-8) would need as she held Molloy scoreless through 6.1 innings.  The Lions made things interesting in the top half of the seventh after junior Milan Botte led the inning off with a double.  Two batters later Alexandra Russo singled to right field advancing sophomore Bernadette Mullane who entered as a pinch runner for Botte.

Mullane would go ahead and score on fielder's choice before Orozco retired the Lions to pick up her 10th victory of the season.  Orozco scattered five hits in the complete game triumph.

Junior Chelsea Hawks (13-9) received the loss as she allowed two runs on five hits in six innings of work for the Lions.

Game 2: Holy Family 7, Molloy 1
As they did in the opener the Tigers did the same in game two scoring a pair of runs in the first inning.  Klem came through with a two-run single down the left field line to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.  Scotto and sophomore Taylor Favinger (Deptford, N.J./Gloucester County Inst. of Tech.) scored on the play.

Starting pitcher Amanda Paredes (Moorpark, Calif./Thousand Oaks) took it from there as she was dealing in the pitching circle.  Paredes was perfect through the first five innings retiring 15 straight batters.  Molloy finally had a batter reach base in the top half of the sixth when junior Ashley Fedor reached on an error.  The runner didn't seem to faze Paredes as she retired the next three batters in order keeping the no-hitter and shutout in tack.

After scoring a run in the third, the Tigers broke the game open with three runs in the fourth.  A big two-out error by Molloy led to three runs as Holy Family grabbed a 6-0 lead.  The Tigers tacked on another run in the fifth thanks to an infield hit by freshman Olivia Nolan (Shoreline, Wash./Shorecrest) that scored Orozco.

In the final frame, Molloy finally got to Paredes as sophomore Olivia Banulski broke up the no-hitter with an infield hit.  Botte then followed with a bloop hit to left field to give the Lions multiple base runners for the first time in the game.

Three batters later, sophomore Sarah Rambo drove a two-out double to right center field to score the Lions' lone run of the game.  Paredes (1-0) retired the next batter to pick up the victory in her first start of the season.

Klem led the team with three hits in the game as she went 3-for-4 with three RBI.  Maggi went 2-for-4, while Nolan finished 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.
