Klem Blasts Two Homers as Tigers Split With Felician



Lyndhurst, N.J. - Freshman Samantha Klem (San Diego, Calif./Clairemont) hit two home runs in game two as the Holy Family University softball team salvaged a split against Felician University in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Matera Field.

Game 1: Felician 6, Holy Family 5
Holy Family entered the top half of the seventh inning leading 3-2 and went on to add a pair of runs in the inning to increase its lead to three runs.  Sophomore Jenna Vasquez (Newark, Del./Caravel Academy) led the inning of with a walk and on the very next play scored when sophomore Taylor Favinger (Deptford, N.J./Gloucester County Inst. of Tech.) tripled to left-center field.  Two batters later Favinger crossed home plate when senior Alexis Maggi (Stratford, N.J./Sterling) hit a sacrifice fly to left field to drive her in.  Favinger's run gave the Tigers a 5-2 lead.
 
In Felician's half of the seventh, the first three Golden Falcons reached base before senior Amanda Lopez delivered a run scoring single that plated two runs after a Holy Family miscue in the outfield.  Freshman Mia Montoya followed with a two-run single to record the walk-off win for the Golden Falcons.  Montoya went 1-for-2 in the opener as she drew two walks and scored a run earlier in the game.
 
 Favinger and Klem each had a pair of hits for the Tigers.  Favinger went 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI, while Klem finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate.
 
Game 2: Holy Family 9, Felician 1 (5)
Holy Family jumped out to an 8-0 lead in game two after three full frames.  The Tigers took advantage of two errors in the first inning by the Golden Falcons that led to a pair of runs.  In the second inning, Holy Family plated four runners and tallied five hits to break the game open.
 
Vasquez drove in the first run of the inning on a fielder's choice before scoring on a triple by Favinger.  Klem then followed with a two-run home run to left field as the Tigers took a 6-0 lead.  Klem struck again in the third inning with her second home run.  This time a solo shot to left field as the Tigers increased their lead to 8-0.  Prior to Klem's home run, Favinger drove in junior Brianna Scotto (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) with a sacrifice fly to center field.
 
Holy Family added another run in the top half of the fifth thanks to a run scoring single by Maggi.
 
Junior Bailey Walters (Ridgecrest, Calif./Burroughs) (7-7) earned the victory for the Tigers as she held the Golden Falcons to one run on three hits through four innings of work.  Walters struck out three batters and didn't issue any walks.  Amanda Paredes (Moorpark, Calif./Thousand Oaks) closed out the game with a perfect fifth inning retiring Felician in order while recording one strikeout.

Klem finished the game 3-for-4 for the Tigers with two runs and four RBI.  Vasquez scored three times as she went 1-for-2 with one RBI, while Favinger went 1-for-2 with two runs and two RBI. 
 
Felician scored its lone run of the game in the bottom of the fourth when Montoya doubled to left center driving in freshman Victoria Quercia.
 
Next Up
Holy Family returns to action on Saturday, April 16 as the Tigers travel to face Bloomfield College in a CACC doubleheader.  Game one is slated for 3 p.m.
