Tigers Drop Game One to Cross-Town Rival Rams

Philadelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University softball team dropped game one of a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader to cross-town rival Philadelphia University by the score of 11-8 on Tuesday afternoon.  Game two reached the top half of the ninth inning before the game was called due to darkness.  Per CACC policy, the game will be replayed from the beginning at a later date still to be determined.

Game 1: Philadelphia 11, Holy Family 8
Holy Family and Philadelphia combined for 19 runs and 24 hits in an offensive battle.  Freshman Courtney Wensel got things going in the second inning when she put the Rams on the board with a two-run single.  The Tigers responded two innings later with pair of runs in the fourth.  Sophomore Koreen Orozco (Whittier, Calif./St. Paul) tied the game after connecting on a two-run single to center field.

The Tigers grabbed the lead in the fifth with three runs highlighted by a two-run triple from senior Kristine Casey (Newark, Del./Caravel).  Sophomores Taylor Favinger (Deptford, N.J./Gloucester County Inst. of Tech.) and Jenna Vasquez (Newark, Del./Caravel Academy) recorded back-to-back one out singles to set the inning in motion.  Casey would later score after a Philadelphia error that allowed freshman Samantha Klem (San Diego, Calif./Clairemont) reach base.  Casey's run capped the inning as the Tigers led 5-2.

However, Philadelphia responded with five runs in its half of the fifth to recapture the lead.  Senior Renee Kakareka cleared the bases with a three-run double after the Rams already had two runs cross the plate in the inning.

The Rams offensive outburst carried over into the sixth inning with four more runs.  Sophomore Mariah Hans and junior Monica Levins each recorded run scoring doubles in the inning.  Hans doubled in the innings first run, while Levins came through with a two-run extra base hit before Kakareka drove in her fourth run of the game to close out scoring. Kakareka finished the game going 3-for-4 with four RBI.

Holy Family came through with two runs in the seventh but were unable to complete the comeback as the Rams held on to the three-run victory.  Sophomore Jennifer Trapp (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County) recorded a RBI double in the inning, while junior Brianna Scotto (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) followed with a bunt single that scored sophomore Alyssa Cudeyro (Sicklerville, N.J./Washington Twp.).
