Tigers Split Non-Conference DH With SCSU

New Haven, Conn. - The Holy Family University softball team split a non-conference doubleheader at Southern Connecticut State University on Thursday afternoon at Pelz Field.  The Tigers took the opener by the score of 3-1 before the Owls closed the day with a 2-0 victory in game number two.

Location: New Haven, Conn. (Pelz Field)

Game 1: Holy Family 3, So. Connecticut 1
Holy Family struck first in a low scoring affair that the Tigers never trailed in the game.  In the top half of the second inning, junior Bailey Walters (Ridgecrest, Calif./Burroughs) connected on a two-out single that allowed sophomore Koreen Orozco (Whittier, Calif./St. Paul) to score from second.  Orozco reached first thanks to an error by Southern Connecticut.  Junior Brianna Scotto (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) followed with a walk before Walters two-out hit.

The score remained 1-0 until the fifth inning when the Tigers tacked on a pair of runs taking advantage of another Southern Connecticut miscue.  With two outs and runners at second and third, sophomore Tori Hernandez (Benton, Ark./Bryant) hit the ball to shortstop in what appeared to be an inning ending out.  However, an error by the Southern Connecticut shortstop allowed both freshman Samantha Klem (San Diego, Calif./Clairemont) and sophomore Jenna Vasquez (Newark, Del./Caravel Academy) to score as the Tigers took a 3-0 lead.  Vasquez finished with a game-high two hits (2-for-4).

That turned out to be plenty of run support for Walters as she recorded a season-high seven strikeouts in the pitching circle to earn her fifth win of the season.  Walters allowed one run which came in the sixth inning on three hits on the afternoon.

Southern Connecticut's Brooke Franco drove in the Owls' lone run in the bottom half of the sixth inning.

Game 2: So. Connecticut 2, Holy Family 0
A two out triple by Heather Jackson followed by a single from Arianne Tedeschi turned out to be the difference in game two.  The Owls broke a scoreless game in the bottom half of the fourth inning with back-to-back two out hits.

With a runner on first, Jackson tripled to score Leanna Feerick to give the Owls a 1-0 lead.  Tedeschi followed with a single to drive in Jackson increasing the lead to two runs.

That turned out to be the only scoring in the game as Holy Family managed just three hits against Southern Connecticut starter Kelsey Cockrill (3-3).  Cockrill went the distance as she pitched seven scoreless innings.  Despite only allowing three hits, Cockrill did fill the bases plenty with five walks and three hit batters.

Holy Family nearly put together a late rally that fell just short in the top half of the seventh.  Walters and sophomore Taylor Favinger (Deptford, N.J./Gloucester County Inst. of Tech.) led the inning off with back-to-back walks before Cockrill retired the next two batters.  Klem then entered the game as a pinch hitter but was plunked by Cockrill, which loaded the bases for the Tigers.  Despite allowing the free bases, Cockrill managed to escape without allowing a single run by striking out the final batter to pick up the victory.

Orozco (3-3) got the start for the Tigers as she went the full six innings allowing two runs on seven hits.  She struck out four batters and issued one walk.

Next Up
Holy Family returns to action on Saturday, March 26 as the Tigers travel to face Wilmington University in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader.  Game one is slated for 12 p.m.
