Tigers Move on to Semifinals With Victory Over Dominican



Philadelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University men's basketball will be heading back to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) semifinals after defeating Dominican College in the quarterfinals by the score of 76-60 on Saturday afternoon inside the Campus Center Gymnasium.

How We Got Here
Holy Family trailed by as many as nine points late in the first half after senior Sean O'Reilly drained a three-pointer to make the score 26-17 at the 7:37 mark.  Over the next four minutes of action the Tigers erased the deficit thanks to a 12-2 run capped by three free throws by senior Marvin Crawford (Edison, N.J./J.P. Stevens).  Crawford was fouled while attempting a three and converted all three free throws to give the Tigers a 29-28 lead.

Crawford finished the game with 17 points with 11 coming via the free throw line (11-14).  He also grabbed 10 rebounds to record a double-double. Holy Family followed with seven additional unanswered points to expand its lead to 36-28 entering halftime. 
 
The Tigers swelled their lead to double-digits early in the second half after a layup basket by redshirt senior Reggie Charles (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) made the score 41-30.  Holy Family maintained its lead the rest of the way despite the Chargers cutting the lead down to seven points midway through the half.
 
The final score turned out to be the Tigers largest lead as senior Turhan Griffin (Philadelphia, Pa./Franklin Learning Center) capped the scoring with a pair of free throws to make the score 76-60.
 
Inside the Box Score
Holy Family: Crawford led the Tigers in scoring with 17 points after converting 11-of-14 from the free throw line… Charles, who entered the game 10 points shy of 1,000 for his career, finished with 15 points as he surpassed 1,000 career points…Redshirt senior Eric Fleming (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) totaled 14 points, while senior Derrick Stewart (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann-Goretti) recorded his 10th double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds… As a team, Holy Family converted 28-of-40 from the free throw line... The Tigers also recorded nine blocks and eight steals on defense with senior James McDonnell (Swansea, Mass./Bridgton Academy) leading the way with four blocks. 
 
Dominican: Sophomore Gerrel Irvin led all scorers with a game-high 25 points after shooting 11-of-15 from the field… He also grabbed seven rebounds…Freshman Travis Cook also scored in double-figures with 14 points and totaled seven rebounds… Senior Glenn Scalia added eight points and six rebounds.
 
1,000 Career Points
Charles became the 26th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points.  Charles surpassed the 1,000 points with a pair of free throws at the 9:19 mark of the second half.  He finished with 15 points and now has 1,005 career points in 59 career games with Holy Family.

Senior Night
After the game, Holy Family honored its senior class with a postgame ceremony.  This year's class includes, Charles, Fleming, Griffin, Isaiah Gans (Philadelphia, Pa./Redemption Christian Academy), Xavier Williams (Philadelphia, Pa./Saul), Stewart, Crawford, Hunter Wysocki (Howell, N.J./Colts Neck) and McDonnell.  
 
Next Up
Holy Family will face the University of the Sciences in the semifinals on Friday, March 4.  Tip-off is slated for 5 p.m. at Dominican College in Orangeburg, N.Y.
