Tigers Set Wins Record in Regular Season Finale



Philadelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University men's basketball team set a new single-season record for wins since joining Division II with a 96-89 victory at Wilmington University in the final Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) regular season game of the year on Tuesday night at the WU Athletics Complex.

How We Got Here
Trailing 52-49 early in the second half, Holy Family went on a 27-10 run to take control of the game. 
Senior Marvin Crawford (Edison, N.J./J.P. Stevens) jumpstarted the rally with back-to-back baskets to give the Tigers their first lead since the first half.  Crawford went on to score nine of the team's 25 points during the run. Senior Hunter Wysocki (Howell, N.J./Colts Neck) capped the run at the 10:11 mark with a layup basket to give the Tigers a 76-62 advantage.
 
Holy Family would go on to lead by as many as 17 points later in the half when redshirt senior Xavier Williams (Philadelphia, Pa./Saul) made the score 84-67 with five minutes to play. 
 
Wilmington cut the score down to seven points after scoring eight of the final 10 points of the game in the final minute but time wasn't on the Wildcats side as the Tigers came away with their 23rd victory of the season.
 
Holy Family scored 57 points in the second half after only recording 39 in the first half.  The Tigers came out firing in the final 20 minutes connecting on 20-of-32 from the field. 
 
Inside the Box Score
Holy Family: Every player that saw time on the court scored against the Wildcats as five players scored in double-figures led by redshirt senior Reggie Charles (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) who finished with a team-high 19 points… Charles shot 6-of-11 from the field and also dished out a career-high 14 assists to record his fourth double-double of the season…Speaking of double-doubles, senior Derrick Stewart (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann-Goretti) tallied his ninth of the season with 15 points and 14 rebounds… Crawford finished the game with 15 points, while senior Isaiah Gans (Philadelphia, Pa./Redemption Christian Academy) added 14 points, five rebounds and two blocks… Redshirt senior Eric Fleming (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) produced 12 points all coming from deep range.
Wilmington: The Wildcats had three players score 20-plus points, including junior Tyaire Ponzo-Meek who finished with a game-high 28 points on 10-of-22 shooting… Senior Sam Sanders came away with 27 points (9-21 FG), while junior Drew Johnson recorded 20 points (8-15)… All three players also collected seven rebounds apiece.
 
What Now?
Holy Family prepares for the postseason as the Tigers finished the season as the CACC South Division Champions.  The Tigers will now face Dominican College, the fourth seed out of the North Division, in the CACC quarterfinals.
 
Quest for 1,000
With his 19 points in the win over Wilmington, Charles is now 10 points shy of becoming the 26th player in the program history to reach 1,000 career points at Holy Family.  In 58 career games, Charles has totaled 990 career points.
 
Setting the Bar High
Tonight's victory marked the 23rd on the season for Holy Family setting a new single-season record for wins since joining Division II in 2003-04.  It also marks the fourth time the Tigers' have reach the 20-win mark in that span.  The team recorded 21 victories in 2007-08 and 2013-14 and finished with a 22-8 record last year. 
 
Next Up
Holy Family will host Dominican in the CACC Quarterfinals on Saturday. Tip-off is slated for 4:30 p.m. inside the Campus Center Gymnasium.
