Division Champs! Tigers Claim South With Win Over Griffins



Philadelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University men's basketball team claimed the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) South Division Regular Season title outright after defeating Chestnut Hill College, 73-56, on Wednesday night inside the Campus Center Gymnasium.

How We Got Here
Holy Family used a 20-1 run midway through the second half to turn what was a three-point game into a one-sided affair.  Chestnut Hill sophomore Edward McWade hit a three-pointer at the 10:41 mark of the second half to cut the Holy Family lead to 45-42.  The Tigers responded by holding the Griffins to one point over the next six minutes and in return scored 20 points of their own to build a 22-point lead (65-43).
 
Redshirt senior Reggie Charles (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) capped the run with a layup with 4:25 left in regulation.  Charles led all scorers with a game-high 23 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the field.  He also recorded four rebounds, six assists and two steals.
 
Holy Family maintained its double-digit lead the rest of the way as Chestnut Hill came as close as 15 points (66-51) with less than three minutes to play. 
 
The Holy Family defense held Chestnut Hill to just 31.7-percent shooting from the field as the Tigers are currently first in Division II in field goal defense.  The Tigers have limited its opponents to 36.1-percent shooting this season.

Holy Family: Charles and senior Turhan Griffin (Philadelphia, Pa./Franklin Learning Center) each scored in double-figures to lead the Tigers' offense… Griffin finished the night with 11 points off the bench… Senior Hunter Wysocki (Howell, N.J./Colts Neck) led the game with 11 rebounds to go along with nine points, while senior Derrick Stewart (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann-Goretti) grabbed 10 boards and tallied eight points… Stewart also picked up a pair of steals and blocks on defense.
 
Chestnut Hill: McWade led a trio of players that scored in double-digits for the Griffins… McWade came away with 15 points and five rebounds, while sophomore Demetrius Isaac and freshman Bryant Quill each added 11 points and five rebounds.
 
Division Champions
Holy Family claimed the CACC South Division Regular Season Title for the second time under the guidance of fifth-year head coach R.C. Kehoe.  The Tigers are currently 16-1 in conference play and have officially clinched the top seed out of the South come tournament time.  Holy Family last won the South Division in 2012-13. 
 
NCAA Division II Rankings
In the first installment of the NCAA Division II East Region rankings, the Tigers, who own the region's best record, find themselves ranked second in the region.  It's the highest ranking the program has received in the NCAA Era.  Saint Anselm College currently holds the top spot in the region.
 
Home Sweet Home
Holy Family extended its home winning streak to 17 games with the victory over Chestnut Hill dating back to last season.  The Tigers finished the regular season undefeated inside the Campus Center with an 11-0 record.  The team's last home loss was versus the University of the Sciences on Jan. 13, 2015.
 
Next Up
Holy Family has two more regular season games remaining on the schedule and will travel to face cross-town rival Philadelphia University on Saturday.  Game time is slated for 4 p.m.
