Tigers Clinch Share of Regular Season Title With Win at Bloomfield



Bloomfield, N.J. - The Holy Family University men's basketball team clinched at least a share of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) South Division Regular Season title with an 81-72 victory at Bloomfield College on Saturday afternoon inside the BC Gym.

How We Got Here
Holy Family pulled ahead early on and never looked back.  With the score tied 5-5, the Tigers went on a 17-6 run over an eight minute span to lead by double-digits.  Senior Derrick Stewart (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann-Goretti) capped the run with a layup with 8:17 to play in the half to give the Tigers a 22-11 advantage.
 
Bloomfield responded with a 10-0 run to come within one point of the lead, but the Tigers quickly turned things around scoring the next eight points.  The mini surge propelled the Tigers to a 38-29 halftime lead.
 
In the second half, Holy Family opened with an 11-4 run to grab its biggest lead of the game.  Redshirt senior Eric Fleming (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) hit a three-pointer at the 17:22 mark to give the Tigers a 49-33 lead.
 
From there Holy Family maintained its lead despite Bloomfield once again coming within one point.  The Bears chipped away at the Tigers' lead as the half proggessed and turned it into a one-point possession (60-59) when Ahmid Williams connected on a three-pointer with 8:15 on the clock. 
 
As they did in the first half, the Tigers held off the Bloomfield rally to maintain the lead.  Holy Family pushed its lead back to double-digits by the final minute to secure the victory.

Holy Family: It was a balanced attack offensively for the Tigers as four players scored in double-figures… Stewart led the way with 15 points (6-8 FG) to go along with nine rebounds… Redshirt senior Reggie Charles (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) recorded his third double-double of the season with 14 points (5-10 FG) and 10 assists… Senior Marvin Crawford (Edison, N.J./J.P. Stevens) finished with 13 points (6-10 FG) and six rebounds, while senior Isaiah Gans (Philadelphia, Pa./Redemption Christian Academy) totaled 13 points as well… Senior Hunter Wysocki (Howell, N.J./Colts Neck) and Fleming each added nine points, while senior Turhan Griffin (Philadelphia, Pa./Franklin Learning Center) posted eight points… Holy Family shot nearly 50-percent from the field as a team after connecting on 28-of-57 from the field.
 
Bloomfield: Senior Claude Blue led Bloomfield with a game-high 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting… Blue also recorded a team-high eight rebounds…Sophomore Ignacio Diez added 14 points and seven rebounds, while fellow classmate Rakwan Kelly contributed 12 points a tied Blue for the team lead with eight boards. 
 
Regular Season Champions
With the victory over Bloomfield, the Tigers claimed at least a share of the CACC South Division Regular Season title.  Holy Family last won the regular season title in 2012-13 when the Tigers finished 13-4 in conference play. 
 
Postseason Push
Holy Family is inching closer to clinching the top seed in the South Division.  With three games remaining in the regular season, the Tigers hold a three game lead over cross-town rival Philadelphia University (12-4).  If Holy Family wins its upcoming game versus Chestnut Hill College on Wednesday it will guarantee the Tigers the number one seed come tournament time out of the South.
 
Next Up
Holy Family will host Chestnut Hill on Wednesday, Feb. 17 in the Tigers' final home regular season contest of the season.  Tip-off is slated for 8 p.m. inside the Campus Center Gymnasium.
