Purple Knights Hold Off Comeback Bid By Tigers



Philadelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University men's basketball team made things interesting late in the second half but the Purple Knights from the University of Bridgeport managed to hold off the Tigers late surge with an 88-77 victory in a non-conference contest on Sunday afternoon inside the Campus Center Gymnasium.

How It Happened
Bridgeport built a double-digit lead midway through the first half to take command of the game.  With the score tied 16-16 at the 8:53 mark, the Purple Knights scored 16 unanswered points to lead 32-16 with 5:17 to play until halftime. Bridgeport would go on to take a 21-point advantage into the locker room at halftime leading 47-26.  The Purple Knights shot 57.6-percent from the field and were 6-of-10 from deep range in the first 20 minutes.
 
In the second half the Purple Knights maintained their double-digit lead and led 78-59 with 6:34 to play before Holy Family went on a massive run.  The Tigers came through with a 17-3 surge over the next four-plus minutes to come within six points (82-76) of the lead.  Freshman Randy Bell (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek) converted 3-of-4 from the free throw line after being fouled while shooting and then a technical foul on Bridgeport to cap the run. 
 
That would be as close as the Tigers would get as Bridgeport converted 4-of-6 from the free throw line in the final minute to hold off the potential comeback bid with an 88-77 victory.

Holy Family: The Tigers had four players score in double-figures, including Bell and fellow freshman Maliq Sanders (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) as both players finished with 18 points… Bell added three assists and two steals to his stat line, while Sanders recorded eight rebounds, four assists and three steals… Freshman Sean Griffin (Abington, Pa./philmont Christian) recorded his first career double-double with season highs in points (10) and rebounds (13)…Freshman Dyllon Hudson-Emory (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) finished the day with 17 points and six rebounds… Freshman Austin Chabot (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) came off the bench and scored eight points while grabbing three rebounds and blocking three shots.
 
Bridgeport: Rakim Lesane came off the bench to score a game-high 24 points to lead the Purple Knights' offense… He finished one rebound shy of a double-double with nine… Sam Joseph totaled 20 points to go along with six rebounds and six assists, while Kyle Benjamin recorded a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds…Benjamin also blocked two shots and totaled three steals on defense.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked just the third meeting between Holy Family and Bridgeport in the short all-time series.  The Purple Knights improved to 3-0 versus the Tigers in the first match up since the 2006 season.
 
Free Throw Attempts
Holy Family set a new program record for most free throw attempts in a single game since the start of the Division II era.  The Tigers went to the line 49 times this afternoon and went on to convert on 36 free throws (73.5%).  Holy Family's previous high came in the 2013-14 season when the Tigers shot 27-of-41 from the charity stripe at Mercy College on Nov. 26, 2013.

Holy Family returns to action on Wednesday, Nov. 30 as the Tigers host Chestnut Hill College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest.  Game time is slated for 8 p.m.
