Tigers Stung by Yellow Jackets in Overtime



Philadelphia, Pa. - Junior Dyllon Hudson-Emory (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) tipped-in the game-tying basket with 24.7 seconds left in regulation to force overtime but the Holy Family University men's basketball team were edged in the extra period as American International College came away with a 61-59 victory in a non-conference contest on Saturday afternoon inside the Campus Center Gymnasium.

How It Happened
Holy Family erased a double-digit second half deficit to tie the game and send it into overtime.  The Tigers trailed by as many as 13 points (41-28) at the 12:48 mark of the second half and within a minute found themselves down six.  Hudson-Emory drained a three-pointer at 12:16 and then freshman Maliq Sanders (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) recorded a steal that resulted in a layup basket by Bell.  After another turnover by the Yellow Jackets, Hudson-Emory scored a basket to make the score 41-35.
 
The Holy Family defense pressured AIC into 30 turnovers throughout the game including 16 in the second half.  The Tigers took complete advantage of the Yellow Jackets' miscues scoring 29 points off their mistakes. 
 
American International kept holding off the Tigers' comeback until the final 76 seconds.  Bell followed a missed three-pointer with a tip-in to bring the score within two points (54-52) with 1:16 to play. Both teams were without a basket until Hudson-Emory tipped in a missed layup with 24.7 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 54-54.
 
On the final possession the Yellow Jackets managed a shot by it was blocked by freshman Austin Chabot (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) as AIC was unable to get another shot off despite grabbing the offensive board.
 
In overtime free throws were the difference maker.  Holy Family held the Yellow Jackets to zero field goals in the extra five minutes, but AIC managed to shoot 7-of-12 from the free throw line to prevail in overtime.
 
AIC scored the first five points via free throws until Bell knocked down a three-pointer to make the score 59-57 at the 1:09 mark.  After a Holy Family timeout, Bell forced a turnover and was fouled.  He then converted a pair of free throws to tie the game at 59-59 with :44 seconds left on the clock.
 
The Yellow Jackets regained the lead on their next possession after Tahlib Swan split a pair of free throws. Holy Family came up empty on its ensuing possession that resulted in a pair of missed jumpers. Swan grabbed the rebound on the final missed shot and was fouled with one second left.  He made the first free throw to make the score 61-59 and then missed the second.  Swan grabbed his own miss as time expired as the Yellow Jackets held on to the two-point victory.

Holy Family: Bell led all scorers with 24 points to go along with six rebounds and four assists… Hudson-Emory added 14 points and nine rebounds while recording a game-high four steals on defense…Sanders finished with five points, six rebounds, five assists, two blocks and three steals, while freshman Sean Griffin (Abington, Pa./philmont Christian) contributed eight points (4-4 FG) and three boards…Chabot contributed five points and seven rebounds to go along with two blocks and a steal… The Holy Family defense forced a season-high 30 turnovers.  
 
American Int'l: Swan finished the game with a double-double after leading the Yellow Jackets with 19 while grabbing 14 rebounds… Max Risch grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds with 15 of them coming on the defensive side… Jayvon Pitts-Young and Kassim Kaba both came off the bench to score in double-figures… Pitts-Young finished with 13 points, while Kaba totaled 10 points.
 
All-Time Series
Holy Family and American Int'l were meeting for the seventh time all-time and the second time this season.  The Yellow Jackets completed the season sweep of the Tigers and extended their winning streak to six games (6-1) in the all-time series.
 
Pressure Defense
The Holy Family defense forced a season-best 30 turnovers as that number also marked the most turnovers by an opponent in the program's Division II era.  The Tigers' previous high mark for opponent turnovers came in the 2007-08 season when Holy Family forced 29 turnovers versus Lincoln University (Pa.) nearly nine years to the date on Nov. 27, 2007.
 
Next Up
Holy Family returns to action on Sunday as the Tigers host the University of Bridgeport in a non-conference contest.  Game time is slated for 2 p.m.
