Tigers Win Big With 83-55 Victory Over Wilmington



Philadelphia, Pa. - Five players scored in double-figures as the Holy Family University men's basketball team defeated Wilmington University by the score of 83-55 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) South Division contest on Saturday afternoon inside the Campus Center Gymnasium.

How We Got Here
Holy Family scored 18 of the game's first 22 points to take a commanding lead early in the first half and never looked back.  The Tigers shot 44.4-percent from the field in the first half as redshirt seniors Reggie Charles (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) and Eric Fleming (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) combined for 26 points in the half. 
 
Both players would go on to finish with 17 points apiece.  Charles also dished out a game-high eight assists, while Fleming connected on 5-of-11 from deep range.
 
Holy Family led by as many as 23 points (36-13) in the half and took a 41-23 advantage into the locker rooms at halftime. 
 
In the second half, Wilmington opened with a 13-0 run to cut the deficit down to five points (41-36) when Brian Adkins knocked down a three-pointer at the 16:16 mark. However, Holy Family responded with a 16-3 run over the next eight minutes to put the game out of reach.  Senior James McDonnell (Swansea, Mass./Bridgton Academy) made the score 57-39 with 8:05 to play in regulation after splitting a pair of free throws. 
 
The Tigers pushed their lead into the 30's in the final minutes leading by as many as 33 (83-50). 
 
Inside the Box Score
Holy Family: Senior Marvin Crawford (Edison, N.J./J.P. Stevens) joined Charles and Fleming in top-scorer honors on the afternoon with a 17-point performance of his own to go along with nine rebounds… Senior Derrick Stewart (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann-Goretti) also scored in double-figures with 11 points to go along with nine rebounds, while senior Hunter Wysocki (Howell, N.J./Colts Neck) totaled 10 points and six boards.  
 
Wilmington: As a team, the Wildcats struggled from the field shooting 27.7-percent from the field… Adkins was the only player to shoot over 50-percent from the field after connecting on 7-of-14 to finish with 19 points before fouling out… Tyaire Ponzo-Meek also scored in double-figures with 12 points to go along with a team-high eight rebounds… Paul Medlin added eight points and eight rebounds before picking up his fifth foul late in the second half.
 
Lock Down Defense
Holy Family entered the weekend ranked third in Division II in field-goal percentage defense, limiting opponents to just 37.4-percent shooting this season.  After holding the Wildcats to 27.7-percent shooting this afternoon, the Tigers should improve on their ranking heading into next week.  The Tigers are also 11th nationally in blocked shots per game (5.1).

Holy Family is back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 20 as the Tigers host the University of the Sciences in a key CACC South Division contest.  Tip-off is slated for 8 p.m.
