Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

First Half Surge Lifts Tigers Past Wilmington, 4-2

Philadelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University women's soccer team scored four first half goals on its way to a 4-2 victory over visiting Wilmington College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest on Wednesday afternoon at Tiger Field.

Holy Family is now 2-1-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the CACC, while Wilmington falls to 1-2-0 overall and 1-1-0 in conference action.

Rust was not a factor as the Tigers were competing for the first time in 11 days.  The Holy Family offense came out firing early in the first half, in fact the Tigers' first goal came within the first minute of action.

Junior Ursula Coyle (Philadelphia, Pa./Little Flower) found the back of the net in the first minute to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead on her first score of the season.

However, the Wildcats followed with a goal of their own ten minutes later when a shot by Hazal Cetin deflected off a defender into the lower left side of net for her first score of the season.

The game didn't stay tied for long as Holy Family regained advantage when sophomore Shannon Metzler (Erial, N.J./St. Josephs (Hammonton)) scored her first goal of the season.  Metzler received a pass from Coyle from the left side and connected from inside the box for the score in the 20th minute.

Five minutes later, Coyle found another one of her teammates on a similar play, this time it was redshirt freshman Stefanie Ulmer (Philadelphia, Pa.) who scored her first collegiate goal in the 25th minute.  Ulmer's goal gave the Tigers a 3-1 advantage.

The Holy Family offense wasn't done scoring goals.  Later in the half, junior Ashley Shackleford (Burlington, N.J./Holy Cross HS) scored her first goal of the season as freshman Brianna Rock (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) set her up with the assist.  Shackleford's goal came in the 41st minute as the Tigers went on to take a 4-1 lead into halftime.

In the second half, the Tigers maintained their three-goal advantage until the 66th minute when Loran Wyrough scored her first goal of the season.  Wyrough received a pass from Carin Essex-Arline on a break-away.

That would be the final score of game as the Tigers held on to the 4-2 lead the rest of the way.

Junior goalkeepers Sienna Smith (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Regional) and Kacie Booth (Maple Shade, N.J./Maple Shade) split time in net for the Tigers.  Smith made a pair of saves and allowed one goal in the first half, while Booth made one stop and allowed one goal in the second half.

The Holy Family defense held Wilmington to only nine shots the entire game, including two in the second half.

Wilmington goalkeeper Kierstyn Williams made seven saves in net after facing 21 shots by the Tigers.

Holy Family is back in action on Saturday, Sept. 19 as the Tigers host Concordia College in a CACC contest.  Game time is slated for 12 p.m. at Tiger Field.
