Tigers Edged by Queens in Non-Conference Tilt

Flushing, N.Y. - The Holy Family University softball team overcame a five-run deficit but was unable to grab the lead as Queens College came away with a 7-6 victory in game one over the Tigers in a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday afternoon.  Game two was called due to darkness in the third inning with the Tigers leading, 9-4.

Holy Family is now 10-7 overall, while Queens improves to 15-12 this season.

Sophomore Bailey Walters (Ridgecrest, Calif./Burroughs) drove in a career-high four runs after going 2-for-3 at the plate.  Walters also hit her second home run of the season.  Freshman Jennifer Trapp (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County) went 1-for-2 with one RBI, while junior Alexis Daubert (Stratford, N.J./Sterling) finished 1-for-2 with a run scoring hit as well.

For Queens, six different players drove in runs for the Knights, including sophomore Kylie Spillett who finished 2-for-2 with two RBI.

Holy Family trailed by as many as five runs after falling behind 5-0 after three innings.  The Knights totaled four runs in the third inning capped by Spillett's two-run single.

However, the Holy Family offense began to click as the Tigers plated a pair of runs in the fourth inning.  With two outs and the bases loaded, Walters came through with a two-run single to right field scoring Daubert and freshman Taylor Favinger (Deptford, N.J./Gloucester County Inst. of Tech.).

Walters would strike again two innings later to tie the game at 5-5 when she connected with her second home run of the season.  Walters homered to center field, a two-run shot, scoring junior Kristine Casey (Newark, Del./Caravel).  Prior to her home run, the Tigers scored a run thanks to a sacrifice fly by Trapp that scored Favinger.

In the bottom of the inning, Queens responded with two runs to regain the lead.  Sophomore Alicia Gonzalez and senior Monique Roberge each drove in runs in the inning to make the score 7-5.

In their final at-bat, the Tigers nearly tied the game once more.  With two outs to start the inning, freshman Jenna Vasquez (Newark, Del./Caravel Academy) was hit by a pitch to keep the inning alive.  Favinger followed with a double down the right field line to give the Tigers two runners in scoring position.

Daubert came through with an infield hit to third base as Vasquez scored to make the score 7-6.

Despite the comeback effort, freshman ToniMarie Valeriano managed to record the game's final out to secure the victory for the Knights.  Valeriano (7-4) went five innings in relief allowing six runs (1 earned) on seven hits.

Holy Family is back in action on Saturday, April 11 as the Tigers host Nyack College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader.  Game one is slated for 12 p.m. at Helen Randle Park in Newtown.  Saturday the team will be hosting a charity doubleheader to help raise funds to support research for ovarian cancer.

NOTES: In game two, the Tigers jumped out to a 9-0 lead after three innings.  Walters supplied the Tigers with plenty of offense as she connected on a three-run homer in the first inning and a grand slam in the second inning.  In her first two at-bats of the game, Walters was 2-for-2 with two runs and seven RBI.  Vasquez accounted for the Tigers other two runs recording a RBI in the second and third innings.  In the second, Vasquez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded two batters prior to Walters grand slam and then hit a sacrifice fly in the third inning for the Tigers' ninth run of the game.  Queens tacked on four runs in the bottom half of the third inning before the game was called due to darkness.  Roberge highlighted the inning for the Knights with a three-run double. * Statistics from game two do not count as the game is not a complete official game.
