Newtown, Pa. - The Holy Family University softball team ended the 2015 regular season with a doubleheader sweep versus the University of Bridgeport in a non-conference match up on Sunday afternoon at Helen Randle Park. The Tigers won both games by the scores of 4-1 and 6-2.
Â
Holy Family improves to 18-13 overall with the two victories as the Tigers now shift gears into postseason play. Holy Family earned the fifth seed after the conclusion of conference play today in next week's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Tournament and will face fourth-seeded Post University on day one.
Â
Bridgeport is now 13-33 overall.
Â
Game One: Holy Family 4, Bridgeport 1Â
In the opener, sophomore
Bailey Walters (Ridgecrest, Calif./Burroughs) (8-6) tossed her second no-hitter of the season as she silenced the Bridgeport bats in a complete seven-inning game.
Â
The offense supplied Walters with a pair of runs early on in the game with a two-run second inning. With two outs in the inning, sophomore
Madison McCleery (Barrington, N.J./Haddon Heights) doubled to drive in freshman
Koreen Orozco (Whittier, Calif./St. Paul) who earlier doubled herself in the inning. Orozco finished the game 2-for-4, while McCleery was a perfect 2-for-2.Â
Â
After a bunt single by junior Alexis Harris, freshman
Jenna Vasquez (Newark, Del./Caravel Academy) delivered a base hit to drive in freshman
Alyssa Cudeyro (Sicklerville, N.J./Washington Twp.) who pinch-ran for McCleery to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.
Â
Bridgeport got one of those runs back in the third inning after taking advantage of two errors by Holy Family in the inning. With the bases loaded, Paige Owens was hit by a pitch to force in the Purple Knights lone run of the game.Â
Â
That would be all the support Walters would need to pick up her eighth victory of the season. She struck out four and retired the final 12 batters after the third inning.Â
Â
Holy Family added two more runs in the fifth inning off two errors by Bridgeport.Â
Â
Game Two: Holy Family 6, Bridgeport 2Â
In game two, freshman
Jennifer Trapp (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County) gave Holy Family another early lead after connecting on her first career home run. Trapp hit a two-run shot that scored freshman
Taylor Favinger (Deptford, N.J./Gloucester County Inst. of Tech.) who reached on an infield single prior.
Â
The early lead gave Orozco enough support as she held the Purple Knights scoreless the first six innings of the game on her way to her seventh victory of the season.
Â
Holy Family tallied single runs in the third and fourth inning to double its lead to 4-0. Walters scored Favinger for her second run of the game with a run scoring single in the third, while Vasquez scored on a passed ball in the fourth. Vasquez pinch-ran for Orozco who singled earlier in the inning.
Â
The Tigers increased their lead to 6-0 in the sixth after senior
Kristy Tomlinson (Philadelphia, Pa./Franklin Towne Charter) drove in a pair of runs with a two-run single. Sophomore
Brianna Scotto (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) and Cudeyro both score of the play.
Â
Bridgeport went on to score two runs in the seventh inning to spoil Orozco's shutout bid. She finished the game allowing two unearned runs and scattering three hits in a complete seven-inning game. Orozco also struck out two batters.
Â
Favinger went 2-for-3 with two runs for the Tigers, while Tomlinson and Trapp each finished 1-for-3 with two RBI apiece.Â
Â
Holy Family returns to action on Thursday, April 30 for day one of the CACC Tournament hosted by Georgian Court University in Lakewood, N.J. The Tigers will face Post in their first game of the day. Check back early in the week for complete tournament schedule and pairings when they are officially announced by the conference office.
