Wilmington, Del. - Sophomore
Bailey Walters (Ridgecrest, Calif./Burroughs) tossed her first career no-hitter in game two as the Holy Family University softball team took two at Goldey-Beacom College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest on Monday afternoon at Jackson Complex. The Tigers took game one by the score of 10-0 and then completed the sweep with a 9-1 victory in game two.
Holy Family improves to 5-1 overall and in conference play, while Goldey-Beacom falls to 0-9-1 overall and 0-6 in the CACC.
Walters picked up her second win of the season after silencing the Goldey-Beacom bats, as she allowed zero hits in a five inning complete game. She also struck out two batters and walked a pair. Walters also finished the afternoon 4-for-7 at the plate with two doubles and a triple. She also scored three runs and drove in four.
Freshman
Jennifer Trapp (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County) was a near perfect 6-for-7 hitting as she scored four times and drove in three runs. Fellow classmate
Koreen Orozco (Whittier, Calif./St. Paul) went 4-for-5 with two RBI and also won her third game of the year in the pitching circle. Orozco scattered two hits in four innings of work to go along with four strikeouts.
The Holy Family offense had ten different players record hits on the afternoon as the team scored a season-high 19 runs in the doubleheader.
Game One: Holy Family 10, Goldey-Beacom 0 Holy Family tallied 14 hits in six innings in the opener as the Tigers scored a season-high ten runs. The team opened the scoring in the second inning with a run scoring single by Orozco to lead 1-0. Orozco finished the game 3-for-3 with two RBI. The Tigers followed with two more runs in the third before opening the game wide open with a four run fifth inning.
Trapp, who went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate, highlighted the inning with a two-run single. Orozco and senior
Kelsi Bunda (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) each had run scoring hits in the inning.
The Tigers tacked on three more runs in the sixth inning thanks to a two-run triple by Walters and a RBI single by freshman
Morgan Maida (Eatonville, Wash./Eatonville).
Freshman
Taylor Favinger (Deptford, N.J./Gloucester County Inst. of Tech.) had a multi-hit game as she finished 2-for-4 with a run.
As mentioned, Orozco (3-0) picked up her third win of the season as she went four innings. She struck out four and allowed only two hits. Maida closed the game out with two innings of relief work. She allowed one hit and struck out three batters.
For Goldey-Beacom, sophomore Paulynn Mao went 2-for-3 at the plate.
Game Two: Holy Family 9, Goldey-Beacom 1 The Tigers offense didn't let up in game two, in fact the team opened with four runs in the top of the first inning to give Walters plenty of lead way.
Favinger opened the scoring for the Tigers with a run-scoring infield hit to shortstop. Freshman
Jenna Vasquez (Newark, Del./Caravel Academy) scored on the play after opening the inning with a single to center field.
Two batters later, junior
Kristine Casey (Newark, Del./Caravel) drove in a pair of runs with a single to right-center field before Walters capped the scoring with a RBI single to center. When it was all said and done, the Tigers had a 4-0 inning after their first at-bat.
Walters (2-0) went on to retire ten straight batters after the first Lightning hitter reached on an error to start the bottom of the first. She finished with two strikeouts and allowed two additional base runners through walks.
Casey, who finished 2-for-3 at the plate, drove in her third run of the game in the third inning to increase the Tigers lead to 5-0.
Holy Family added another four runs in the fifth with another run scoring hit by Favinger after she tripled to right-center field. She went 2-for-3 in the game to go along with two runs and two RBI.
The Tigers also received run scoring hits from Walters and junior
Claudia Boggi (West Chester, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) who both recorded back-to-back doubles.
The Lightning scored their lone run in the bottom of the fourth when freshman Courtney Allen rushed home after a throwing error by Walters. Allen reached base after being issued a one-out walk.
Holy Family is back in action on Wednesday, April 1 as the Tigers travel to face Georgian Court University in a CACC doubleheader. Game one is slated for 3 p.m. in Lakewood, N.J.
